PS3 About to throw the PS3 into a wall...

Ok...so I am having some pretty big problems that are making me very frustrated. I can not get my PS3 to play CoD4 online anymore. It was shaky to being with, but now it's just frustrating to no end. Never mind you we can get our Xbox 360 to play CoD4 without any problems.

I keep getting that fucking Downloading Game Settings issue. I can not get away from it. No matter how many ports I open (to who knows what address, this whole thing is confusing), or setting my PS3 to DMZ and allowing it to be completely open. I can not get it working. As I sit here and type this, it's been almost 2 hours and I still haven't been able to play one single game of Call of Duty.

I've been working on this for the past week and still can't get a straight answer online or figure out what the fuck my router is doing. I don't even understand what ports are being applied to my router. I thought I did but I guess I didn't. I see new-host 3 and another new-host 3, and 192.168.1.4 which is the PS3's IP address right now, and some other shit. I have manually forward certain ports on the 192.168.1.4 and I am just confused and angry as all hell. I'm about to return this thing and get an Xbox 360 to play CoD4 online with my friends.

What can I do? I need some help.

Well, i'm going to return it to Circuit City and get an Xbox 360 to play with my friends online. It's not as frustrating, easier to use and I like the 360 more. PS3 is a beast though and I will almost miss it. I need a break from the format war as well.

I don't really understand the problem, but if it's your router and such, it would have little if anything to do with the PS3, right?

I dunno.

Sounds like a router issue to me. My PS3 has never had connection issues.

If it's an older router I have had connection problems. By putting in a newer router, I was able to connect without any problems. The problem router was a Linksys, while d-link router I have has had no problems.

Technically, if the PS3 was TRULY sitting in the DMZ, then there shouldn't have been any router problems. The only way to truly know would be to hook it up directly to the cable modem... Of course, there would likely be issues getting that working too (most Cable companies limit the number of MAC addresses that can attach to the LAN side of a cable modem).

The biggest problem I have is that the 360 works fine (on the same router) and the PS3 seems to crap out with CoD4. I am keeping the console. I like the PS3 a lot. Borderline love, but after trying a ton of possible fixes and it still takes almost 20 minutes to an hour to get past Downloading Game Settings, frustration ensues.

I can't think of any other solutions though. Anyone have any other ideas?

Have you tried enabling or disabling UPNP on the router? Reverse what it is currently set to, and try again.

Although, I'd keep COD4 360 simply because the online play is better - more features, bigger userbase.

Call your ISP & ask for more bandwidth??.

Check another game out or try out the PS3 store & download a trailer. Disable the internet connection settings from the PS3 menu.. try & sign in.. enable internet connection.. Sorry I am probably just confusing the shit out of you..

Carry on.

Amazing indeed.

I would used Ruineds idea check your routers upnp settings. But if the 360 isn't having issues with it then....

I've had that same issue with my PS3. Whenever I wanted to play COD4 or UT3 online, it would work sporadically. Sometimes I got connected, sometimes it would take a hella long time to work. On the flip side, my 360 has always worked fine on the internet. 100%. Also, it's a lot easier to manage friends and just more online friendly in general. As a personal rule of thumb, I use my 360 as my main online gaming entity, whereas I use the PS3 mostly for single player games.

I think the bottom line is that XBOX Live is a lot better than PSN... On XBL, there is a bigger community, more features, better matching, better performance. PSN may be free, but from what I've read its nowhere near as good.

Well, I've never had a problem with diconnects on PSN... I never played CoD4 on the system though, so I can't say for sure... but I've never had a problem with UT3 and other titles.

Xbox Live does have a better online interface though, at least until in-game XMB support is added this year at some point.

I used to have problems with CoD4 online with my PS3 but after they released the 1.1 patch and I stopped using the wifi connection I haven't had a single problem. I think the wifi chip in the PS3 is a piece of crap. My other wireless devices have a great connection to my router but the PS3 is always super slow.

Not sure why tech-oriented people need builtin wifi anyway. I have like 3 devices that need internet access at my home theater. Just get one wireless bridge and a switch, that's the best way to do it anyway than have 3 seperate wifi devices. If I had PS3 I definitely would not use the wifi, the switch/bridge is a much better solution... Not smart to have 3 wireless devices all next to one another competing for the same signal when you can have a single quality bridge with switch directing traffic.

Oddly enough, I have never had an issue with the internet speed of my PS3. It downloads things very quickly and I've even used it to work from home over the internet, when I accidentally left my Mac Book at work. It worked much better than expected. My gripe is online gameplay. It's simply not as fun as XBL. Also, there are random issues that arise whenever I play. For example, there is an annoying lag in COD4 when playing on PSN. It's a small lag, but it's annoying. I don't even bother with it anymore.

Having said that, I'm still a fan of built-in wifi. Actually, I'm a fan of anything that can help reduce the wire situation I got going on in my HT.

Ok, here is my MAJOR complaint about the PS3-

Eject function- can anyone solve this or is the system just that un-user friendly?

The machine sits in Standby Mode all the time. You put a disc in (game or movie) and it fires up. When you're done, you can turn it off (or back to standby mode I should say) with that remote it comes with.

QUES-

Last night is an example. I went to the machine later in the evening to eject a movie I rented that I wanted to return to BBV. My whole entertainment system was off. If I hit EJECT on the front of the machine, the disc pops out, and THE MACHINE STAYS ON !!!

I have to go back, turn on the receiver and tv to get a picture so i can see the menus to do the system shut down.

Why does that on/off looking button on the front do nothing? In fact, what is its purpose? I push it and nothing happens. Is mine broken?

Try pushing and holding for a few seconds. Like turning off a computer that locked up.

You hold your finger on the on/off button to turn the system off. They're not even buttons really, they're sensors...

I'm not sure what else you're complaining about.

Turning the ps3 off is a breeze. They changed the menu settings so that if you hit the ps button on the controller, you'll hear a beep. Hit "X" two times and the system shuts off. Or you can go to the console and hold your finger down over the light on the power switch. After a few seconds it beeps and begins to shut down. Too easy!!

My gf's dad had asked about this as he got one as a BD player. Good to know. And yeah, the on/off button is weird because you're not even sure you're doing anything if you dont get the reaction you expect. I don't like it.

Well, the only way I could get on to CoD4 without waiting a good 2 hours was to start the game, get the "Downloading Game Settings" thing going, and manually shut off the modem/router we have. After turning it back on and re-logging into PSN (through CoD4) it worked instantly.

Pain in the butt, but it works. I'm not getting rid of the machine though, it's way too great of a Blu-Ray player (even if I don't have an HDMI capable receiver, the sound is still pretty good). Not a single glitch yet!

Well, since it's a sensor, it would suck if touching it slightly caused it to turn off or reset. I remember the original NES would stain me with that power button being so sensitive. How many games had been lost because of that.

I only use the controller or remote to turn it on or off. I guess if you needed to put a new disc in you would be by the player, but otherwise, especially for shutting off, I dont know why you would use the system to turn it off.
