I bought a PS3

I wanted to replace my broken PS2, which does not respond to either controllers or the builtin IR, and rather then mess around with it, I went and bought a 80GB PS3 with MotorStorm. Yes, I know about the MetalGear bundle, but I could not find any in Thunder Bay, and this was the only 80GB one I found. I am very happy, I intend to use it as a super media centre and DVD player, since it will actually inverse telecine video content, unlike my other DVD players.

Nice! You're going to love Motorstorm. It is a fantastic game, and a lot of fun to play. Great graphics to boot. Oh, and I think I heard somewhere that it plays blu-ray movies too.

I found that out quickly. I planned on buying the remote but I can't believe one is forced to buy it.

Actually for $19.99 (what I paid. I think its regular $24) its a good remote. But yet again Sony doesn't want you using the ps3 with any other remote so its all bluetooth. It's a good remote though. I am wondering why theres no zoom on it though like every other remote out there.

That is to recover part of the massive cost of including Blu-ray with the system. If it was IR you could simply download the Harmony codes or the like and as a result Sony would not get your $20.

I am totally fine with using the controller as a remote so far.

I must say, I am really please with the DVD playback of the unit, the 480P output over component is a huge improvement over my other players and it inverse telecines correctly, unlike my other DVD players. It will even deinterlace when going frame by frame, that was super awesome to see. The PS3 is light years ahead of the XBOX 360 as a DVD player. I know there are better players, but I won't benefit from them since all I watch are correctly deinterlaced by the PS3 as is.

Yeah, I have been perfectly fine with the ps3 controller as my remote. I think it's easier for me to find the buttons I need in the dark. I am still getting used to the controls for the hd-xa2 after I had just gotten familiar with the hd-a2/35's remote. The XA2's remote reminds me of some old remote from the 80's.

There is no dedicated button for it, but you can zoom. Hit the triangle and one of the symbols there is for zoom. It does normal, double and pan or something like that.

I'm betting that's in the instruction manual right?

Its nice that zoom isn't easily found because thats the feature foolscreeners look for when they see black bars.

I am enjoying it very much, I honestly am using it for playing movies more so then playing games. I did buy Resistance and Uncharted, both of which I plan to play the crap out of once I get my rear speakers installed (hopefully tonight) and start watching LOST on DVD.

You can always buy the cheap Nyko control (for about $10). That one doesn't use blue tooth. It comes with a USB device you plug into the console. Using this method you can toss the cheap remote and link it to your Harmony universal remote.

meh, the select button is my friend.

Even if this were IR I would still prefer to use it along with my Harmony.

Uncharted is a good game though a little campy. If it wasn't such an obnoxious 'game' I'd recommend Metal Gear Solid 4, but, it completely fails as a game and is more a vehicle for the director's exploration of bad cinema.

I'd suggest you take a look at LittleBigWorld as it looks fascinating (it releases in November).

Also, LEGO Star Wars, which is out now, a great game for two people.

I don't think this is right. I have yet to see a zoom icon from the triangle menu.

I agree about MGS4... Uncharted I thought was amazing, and a good balance of gameplay and story.
