Just picked up Quantum Redshift for XBOX, and I thought this would be a cool thread to start - what are your favorite and least favorite futuristic racers? Here are mine in alphabetical order:
FAVORITES -- Deathtrack (PC) F-Zero (SNES) Killer Loop (Arcade/Dreamcast/PC/PSX) Quantum Redshift (XBOX) RoadBlasters (Arcade/Genesis/NES/C64) Rollcage (PC/PSX) HONORABLE MENTIONS -- San Francisco Rush 2049 (Arcade/Dreamcast/N64/PSX) (fantastic battle mode, and cool stunt mode, but crappy racing mode) LEAST FAVORITES -- F-Zero X (N64) POD series (PC/Dreamcast) Star Wars Episode I: Racer (Arcade/PS2/PC/Dreamcast/N64) Wipeout Series (PSX/PS2/N64)

Back in the day F-Zero (SNES) kicked ass. It was the only one around that I had access to. I just recently bought it for like $7 at Funcoland. The lack of multiplayer (IIRC) hurts though.
What I remember of F-Zero (N64) was good. I remember there being a lot of 'cars' and everything was fast as hell. I should rent that one again to see if what I remember still stands. Hopefully F-Zero (GCN) comes through shining. I trust Namco (or is it SEGA? in which case I completely trust them ) for the most part.F-Zero (GBA) is pretty faithful to the original. A whole lot harder though. Still very fun and looks great on the GBA. I just bought Wipeout 3 (PSX) a couple months ago and haven't really played much of it. The single player hasn't satisfied me that much yet and I still haven't busted it out when friends are over. So far it's been worth it. Basically a $6.99 audio CD. :p Some decent music on that game. Oh... the menus... horrible! Most of the time you can't even read it because they went for the 'cool, sleek, futuristic look' (ie: really really small fonts). I've always hated all of the San Fransico Rush games. I guess the reason is the insane crashes and jumps. Seems like 90% of the game is spent do (seemingly) slow-motion barrel rolls. Blech! |

I dunno, I always really liked F Zero X. I think in some ways it lost some of the charm of the original, but in other ways it gained new charm (one, as IKEA stated, it had 20 cars I think racing at once, and they would usually all be on screen together...awesome). The original may still hold as my favorite however. Wipeout was always too hard for me. The new one is supposed to have wider tracks, which was always my complaint, so maybe that will help.
Quantum Redshift looks awful pretty, but a friend the other night while we were at Wal-Mart commented, "Is that Wipeout on the XBOX?" He was a distance, but from a distance it did look a lot like Wipeout. I had never noticed before. I will rent it sometime soon hopefully.

As for F-Zero X, it was technically impressive for its time (60fps, lots of cars, good graphics, etc), but I felt the track design left a lot to be desired when compared to the original F-Zero.

Not really my genre, but I also loved F Zero X. For those of you that didn't like it, did you really sink your teeth into multiplayer, or were you just doing the single player mode? I also found the single player a bit lacking, but MP with three friends was a blast
My other vote goes to Wipeout XL for PSX. It was pretty darn fun to play, but I have to admit, its best qualities are probably the design and soundtrack ![]() |

Oh wow. If you still have your copy, or can pick one up for cheap, I say give the MP a spin at least. The last time I played, I got calls from two of my neighbors because my friends and I were screaming at each other so loud!
