Personally, I'd say wait for Sega's NHL 2K3. If you played NHL 2002, it is basically the same as 2003. EA's hockey games are more of an arcade style sim, very fast paced and high scoring, if you are looking for a more accurate sim go with 2K3.

I own NHL 2002 and I loved it played two complete seasons with the Penguins, but then I picked up NHL 2K2 (only released on Dreamcast) and wow it was amazing, and it was only Dreamcast and it knocked my socks off.

I'd say rent it first if you've never played an EA hockey game, if you like it pick it up it is a good game, but if you are looking for more in-depth hockey go with Sega's 2K3.

BTW, the commentary on EA's NHL series is horrible!!! The commentators take hockey in the American aspect, more hits and fighting the better, now I am American, but I understand all the finesse and don't watch for the fights. But, the commenatators are more worried about cracking jokes with each other than calling the game.

Wait for SEGA's NHL 2K3 (11/12/02). IMO the SEGA Sports series offers a more realistic and fun hockey game. Plus the XBOX version supports online play!

I was recently really looking forward to buying NHL2003 as my first ever hockey game for my PS2. That was about 2 weeks ago. Since them I've been doing some research as to what would be the better buy - NHL2003 or NHL2K3.
After reading opinions on various message boards, etc NHL2K3 definately appears to be the better game for me. Someone here on DVDFile actually cautioned me from buying 2003, starting my decision to research the 2 games.
So personally, I'm holding off until Nov. 12 to buy NHL2K3, even though that means having to deal with damn Jeremy Roenik on the cover rather than one of my favorite player Jarome Iginla on the cover of NHL2003. Small price to pay I guess.

I have to agree with that. EA knows football (NCAA and NFL) but other than that, they just can't get it right.

I've been playing Madden for PS2 since PS2 came out, never played it for 64 or PS, or anyother system. But, I picked up NCAA this year too along with Madden, and I love it. The commentary and game play is golden.

Picked up NHL last year, my first hockey game for PS2. I loved it at first like I said I loved, but agter I played 2K2 (played it like may of this year), I haven't touched it. Thing that sucks is I can't even trade it in...I had Mario sign the front cover and most of the penguins sign the manual....lol oh well...it's still one heck of a collectible!

this is off-topic, but...
As a big basketball fan (my favorite sport to watch, play, and buy video games of), I'm hyped for this weeks release of NBA2K3. Should be fantastic! Will definitely be a nice complement to NHL2K3 once I get that too.

Isn't Sega doing a NCAA Basketball 2K3? Any word on it? I'd much rather have a college game than a pro.

That's true, but that would mean I'd have to trade in ALL 2 of my games (NBA Street, GTA3) for a new one. This amateur gamer can't quite do that.... I'm far to attached to my tiny collection of games.

Teah NCAA Basketball2K3 is coming eventually too.

I saw this deal last Sunday, when I went there to pick up UT2K3. I didn't ask them about it, but I'm guessing they're really selective as to which titles qualify for this offer (my guess is it applies to new releases this year, and no Greatest Hits titles)

I'll hold off for a while to see if anyone puts this game on sale in the coming weeks. I'm not paying $50 for this, no matter how good the improvements are.

Well, I have NHL Hitz 2003 for the XBox, and NHL 2003 for the PC, and have to say that NHL Hitz is more fun to play, but NHL 2003 is more realistic. I'm gonna rent NHL 2003 for the XBox soon just to see how it is on the XBox, and will post my opinions on it. By the way, do you guys know when Fifa 2003 is coming out?

I know an XBOX Live-capable NCAA Basketball 2K3 will be released for XBOX this year, not sure about details for other platforms.

According to EB, FIFA 2003 for the PC will be available on October 29.

It looks like I might end up buying two hockey games this year. NHL 2003 is on sale this week for $29.99 at TARGET, and my purchase of NHL2K3 (PS2 or GC) is contingent on the reviews it receives.

Louie, the PS2 version is scheduled to ship a week later, i.e. on November 5. It's the PC version that's (tentatively) scheduled for an October 29 release.

I think it's back on sale this week for $29.99 at one of the retail chains. I'll need to check my flyers, if you're still interested.
