Looking for good space shooter

Hey all,

I'm feeling nostalgic and am looking for a good space shooter game. I'm talking primarily about games like Gates/Lords of Thunder (which had the coolest music BTW), Raiden, R-Type, etc. Failing those, any shooter-for-points like Galaga would work for me too.

Are there any new versions of these for PS2/PSX out there that (here's the tough part) are worth picking up? I know there are the "classic games" PSX discs out there, but are those any good? Updated versions with all the graphical/sound bells and whistles would be even better.

I know it's kind of a weird request, so anything that could help me is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
m13b

I love these games. The best you can get right now are on Dreamcast. Games like:

1. Ikaruga
2. Gunbird 1 & 2
3. Mars Matrix
4. Giga Wing 1 & 2

Awesome games. Ikaruga is coming out for Gamecube, which is really cool, but I would never pay $50.00 for a shooter

I don't know of any real killer shooting games for PSX, I'm a DC boy myself.

I was going to mention this, since Treasure did it. Haven't played it yet, but usually Treasure is fairly reliable. Einhander I have played and is fairly fun, and I'm not even a shooter fan! There were some shooters released for the DC, but all in all, it appears to be kind of a dying genre.

Wow, Ikaruga looks fantastic. Perhaps I'll borrow my brother's ol' DC and hunt that sucker down. Too bad it's doesn't look PS2 bound. (Agg! Too many consoles!)

In the meantime, think I might try giving Einhander and Silpheed: The Lost Planet (came across this one blindly clicking around Amazon) a rent. Can't wait!

Thanks again,

Ikaruga OWNS. It has some of the coolest features a shooter could have...I'm gonna PM you and ask ya a question that may not be suitable for the boards.
