PC New DOOM III screenshots!!

Someone has taken the time to scan the Doom III article in the latest issue of PC Gamer (my copy should be in the mail - hopefully). I'm so happy that I'm a born-again PC gamer.

Link

According to the article, these are 800x600 screens done by a Radeon 9700 Pro card. I'm looking at these and I'm thinking to myself: there is no way these results can be replicated on a console, and that includes the XBOX (I know there's a port planned for it, but let's be realistic )

I may need to upgrade my video card though. It will have to be a 9700 Pro or the far-from-being-finalized 10000.

I am soooo looking forward to this. Kinda. Someone told me he was saving up for computer upgrades for Doom III and I told him 'blah blah blah coming to Xbox also' and he said 'yeah, but when has an FPS been good on a console' ... and I thought 'shit, the reason i haven't really enjoyed too many FPS's is because my computer sucks and I'm totally lame using a console controller. So... my point in this mindless-just-woke-from-nap post is I need to start working to at least upgrade my 475 to a 1 GHz, bosst my ram and most importantly get a frickin' motherboard with an AGP slot! the reason i've been stuck using dated cards in the past.

Did Paul Newman say "Doom" in the Hustler? I can't remember. I know TOm Cruise said it in color of money...

You might want to upgrade your upgrade list. After seeing those screenshots, I'm thinking my GeForce3 isn't up to scratch.

Anyoine have another, live, link?

I actually feel the opposite. I've been playing PC games for a long time, and I felt recently the reason I haven't been enjoying FPS games on the PC was because I had to use a mouse and a keyboard to be competitive, especially online. Though I kicked ass in netgames, I was never really comfortable playing for long periods of time with M/K, due to having to sit at a desk, face right in front of a screen, etc. I remember longing for the days of Wolf3D and Doom where you could get away fine single player, or via modem (DWANGO) using a joypad like the Gravis Gamepad. Halo was the first game to come out that I felt actually gave me a similar level of control as a K/M setup. Sure, you can't swing around as fast, but if the enemies and AI in the game aren't designed for you to swing around as fast, it doesn't really matter. And, if in multiplayer games everyone is using a controller, you are not at a disadvantage - since there is no mouse on XBOX, this is the case. I guess what I'm saying is I enjoy the dual-analog control setup, specifically the XBOX's, as it gives me the ability to look around relatively freely while still retaining the comfort and conveniance of a controller. My PC is a P3-733mhz with a GeForce 3 Ti200, and 384mb RAM. Not cutting edge, but it can run most of the latest stuff at 60fps with details on low to normal. Yet, I haven't bought a single PC game since I got the XBOX - I just don't find gaming with my PC as fun as gaming with my XBOX in general. So, in conclusion, I'll be picking up Doom3 for XBOX, though I could probably run the PC version fine.

Your PC specs are good enough for UT2K3's minimum requirements (the additional 256MB RAM does help, but you'll still be swapping some textures with your HD). I'm sure id will up the ante by the time Doom III rolls around, and even Epic Games' Unreal II: The Awakening.

In my case, I've found the opposite to be true: I've bought more PC games in recent months than those for my consoles (an average of 6 PC titles for every game on my PS2 / GC). There are more interesting PS2 games available by year's end than on the PC, so it all evens out.

Doom 3 looks freaking awesome! I will be getting this game the minute it come's out. I have not made up my mind as to what I'll be buying it for my Xbox or my PC. In a recent interview with Carmack he said the Xbox version would be the same graphically as the PC version. I personally am more comfterble with the Xbox pad than with a key/mouse (probably due to Halo marathons) but controls are a matter of oppion. I'm buying a new computer at the end of next month I have made up my mind between 2 systems but have to watch my cash flow. My first choice is an Alienware AREA 51 but the less costly AURORA DDR is looking very nice also. If theres one thing for sure both of these's systems should run Doom 3 with no problems at all and thats all that matters.

Alienware is offering 1-cent shipping on all of their systems for the next 9 days (I'm pretty sure regular S&H costed an arm and a leg ). With so much new technology on the horizon (Serial ATA, DDR-II memory, KT400A / nForce2 chipsets, etc.), it just makes more practical and economic sense to build a PC from scratch. By the time DOOM III does show up in store shelves, the technology should be mature enough to minimize any possible hardware issues.

Alienware is for rich people who want the best. A local computer store would be able to give you identical performance without the exorbitant price. That's my take on it.

But, with that being said, you can't go wrong with Alien! Kick ass systems!

I found a huge, hi-res movie called Doom_Legacy. It's a really neat retospective about the history of Doom. Intervies with John Carmack, Hollenshead, a bunch of other id people and even Trent Reznor.
Basically, it talks about the features of Doom3 and how technologically awsome the new engine is. The screenshots are very impressive!

It's a huge 85MB zipped file. If anyone wants to figure out a way for me to xmit to you, I'm up for it. Would IM handle that?

Everything I have read about Doom 3 say's its single player only there was never a plan to make it multiplayer. So unless something changes between now and when it comes out I would not count on it Larry.

Actually, Doom III is multiplayer, has been from the beginning I believe...maybe not, so you might be right that it wasn't at one time. However, id has confirmed it is multiplayer, however it will be basic deathmatch play, and nothing more. They are concentrating on single player. I wouldn't, however, be surprised to see an expansion pack soon after that will add a bunch of multiplayer modes.

I know it seems like a stretch, but Carmack stated at QuakeCon that the XBOX version of Doom III would not be visually different from the PC counterpart. You never know - unified memory architecture, Geforce 3 with two shaders, direct to the metal programming, no OS overhead, etc... I guess we'll see when it comes out.

The pages have since been taken down. However, if you still want to see the articles and photos, they were taken from the latest issue of PC Gamer, which should be on store shelves as we speak.

I read the same claim in the current issue of Computer Gaming World. The XBOX is still running off of a GeForce 3 GPU, not exactly a graphics powerhouse. I know XP is a resource hog, but even with this overhead, the new videocard offerings, with more rendering pipelines, geometry engines and faster memory, should easily outpace any advantages consoles have with respect to their unified architectures.

Alpha Version leaked

Somehow, the alpha version of Doom III was leaked and is floating around on the internet. The alpha is basically what was shown at last May's E3 show and is very unstable (the gaming fairy was nice and ...ummm, left it under my pillow), crashing after about 5 minutes of playing. First off, if you did not see video of this game at E3, the pictures don't do this game any justice. The realism is jaw-droppingly gorgeous and knocks UT2003, a great looking game, down a couple of pegs. I am going to try and put up some screenshots later this week (my computer doesn't like me too much at the moment).

This tidbit has been making the rounds on the PC forums, but fearing any potential legal entanglements with id, the majority of moderators have been locking any and all threads related to this subject, an issue I remain undecided on. The rumour is that someone at ATI leaked the demo, but that hasn't been confirmed, and neither Carmack nor id has commented in-depth on the issue.

From what I've read, those who have downloaded the demo and ran it on their machines were bogged by sluggish framerates; I've heard 10-12 FPS on a Radeon 8500, with no AA enabled. I hope folks who took the time to DL the alpha build realize that the game is nowhere close to going gold (maybe that's why it's called an alpha build ) and that they're not going to draw conclusions on how the final product may turn out.

I saw a video capture taken from an ATI developers' meeting and it truly is something to behold, running fluidly with all of the AA and AF features turned on, all powered by the Radeon 9700 Pro.

As gorgeous as UT2K3 is, we all know it wasn't meant to be on the same level as DOOM III, although Epic Games is promising that Unreal 2 will give it a run at the title for best looking PC game.

Umm, he said the game was single player only. I replied that it has always had multipayer in it, but that they were indeed concentrating on the single player. When I said it was multiplayer I did not mean it was multiplayer only, or something of the Quake III sort. Figured that was understood.
