Tony Hawk 4 is finally here

I picked up my copy for xbox at noon today. I have been playing nonstop since 5 when my last class ended. I am loving this game. I like how they did the career mode now. No more time limit is nice. I really like the first level college. The tennis mini game is also quite nice. What is everybody elses impressions of this.

I'll have to agree! Played for a few hours last night (PS2), and I'm loving it. The goals are unique, plentiful and fun, the levels are finally the size I expected from THPS3 - looks like a lot of hours will be burned at this altar.

Except for the tennis mini-game... Can't say I enjoyed that at all. Weird physics, and that ball looks... off. But I wasn't in a "Bjorn" state of mind anyway, I was trying to channel (the non-dead) Rodney Mullen.

Now, what to do with this $15000+ I have saved up... what they've done with the money system is weird. Not bad, but weird. You can buy secret levels, players and cheats. What has anyone bought so far? I bought a few things, but didn't save the game, so I still have the cash. (Shhhh! I'm cheating!)

Gonna try online play this weekend. Gotta get more stat points before I try that tho. Got about 2 more to go on each attribute. Hey, if any of you guys out there playing, look for me - I play as misfit13b, East Coast - unless all the games are West Coast (like they were in THPS3).

I might have to get this, even though I was thinking of passing on it. All three console versions are getting amazing reviews, just like Timesplitters 2.

I have to say I'm very disappointed in the lack of XBOX Live support. Though you can play over the internet with XBCONNECT or Gamespy Tunnel, XBOX Live support would have been far superior. I won't be buying THPS4 until a live-enabled edition or Live booster disc comes out - there are too many other good games out there right now.

I also have a nice press release here from May 2001 detailing how Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for XBOX would feature online gaming - too bad the development switched over to Neversoft after 2X... Treyarch has proved to be much more proficient with the XBOX hardware.

I am not going to ask why you have that press release just sitting around, but one reason TH3 may not have had online play is that the XBOX network wasn't up and running yet. Like many games, it then had to scrap its online component.

As for TH4, I have no idea why they didn't include, though one can theorize it may have something to do with XBOX Live being MS' network, and their might have been objections like EA had. Just a possibility.

And I agree, the PC version will be the best.

They're all gonna be great. The only thing that would make them all even BETTER is if I could play online with my PS2 and take you on on your PC and Ruined on his Xbox simultaneously.

Stupid video game schisms.

My brother is a big fan of these games and he's got Tony Hawk 3, so is 4 enough of an improvement to justify buying it? Christmas is in 2 months, gotta start getting some ideas.

As for the PR, it's a Word document on my hard drive from some pre-XBOX launch stuff. I coded one of XBOX websites currently up, and still occasionally do work for them, so I am privvy to certain news and stuff sometimes. As for no online in TH3/TH4, it's very possible Neversoft was not familiar enough (or did not want to put the time into) the XBOX hardware. The PR was done prior to the release of THPS2X, when Treyarch was doing the coding for the THPS series. Treyarch's THPS2X game has a far superior interface, and noticably better graphics than the later-released THPS3 by Neversoft. Treyarch really seemed to be taking advantage of some of the XBOX special effects, while Neversoft just got the game running, with special features like annoying 2 second pauses between switching skaters in the main menu.

From the reviews of THPS4, it's clear that Neversoft again made no attempt to make use of any of the XBOX's special features, like Treyarch did in THPS2X. I could guess that they didn't want to bother with XBOX Live, either. You know, the same "port as quick as possible and make as much money as possible in the shortest period of time regardless of quality" ideal that EA embraces. Though thankfully, Neversoft did create a quality game here - it's just lacking in the features department.

The idea about the "objections" does not make any sense, as Activision has announced that the title "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" which they are releasing in early 2003 for XBOX will take advantage of XBOX Live. Neversoft wouldn't really have any say in a political move such as the stunt EA pulled.

all the 2 player modes i would assume you can play against another person online then just in your room, i think it would be cool if you could have ten skaters on screen at once doing a 2 minute run to see who can get the highest score

I'm not sue about 4, but that's what you could do in 3 on the computer.

I pulled the following info from a review on IGN's PS2 site (they gave the game a 9.3, btw ):

"Online multiplayer was a relatively minor feature in Hawk 3, at least in comparison to what's available now. Hawk 4 doubles the player limit, offers more multiplayer games, adds team competition, and introduces new community features. There's a "homie list" for tracking friends online, and levels created in the create-a-park mode can be uploaded or downloaded to share or try out."

To me, that's the coolest feature of the game. I know the park editor is limited, but still, some people are extremely creative, and it is one of the features I wish had been in TimeSplitters2.

Well i finally got my copy of the game and decided to go with my XBox for it. I need to get use to the controller but so far not bad. I have to admit that i actually miss the challenge of the 2 minutes in order to get as many objectives done as you can. Its nice to have it for some challenges but i like taking on more then one challenge at a time. Oh well, i never got a chance at the create a park but from what i have read in my magazine its pretty good. I like that you can place your own objectives in the level for others to get and the backgrounds are better then the last game. The graphics i thought could of been upgraded a bit but still not bad.

Now that i have rented THPS4, i have reversed my opinion, i love it. The new goals, no time limit, endless amount of things to do. It somewhat linear but open-ended at the same time, its great.

I picked up the last copy at my local Blockbuster last night and have been playing it non-stop. The levels are much more challenging and fun than in any of the other TH games. Again, ActiVision knows how to deliver a quality game.
