Xbox Halo 2

Due to the fact that halo was such a smash hit for the xbox, i know there is a halo 2 in development. Does anyone know anything about it? I know its not coming out until fall 2003, but i would like to know more about it.

You can download a movie of it at XBOX.COM. Although it looks like a CG movie, its actually being realtime rendered on the XBOX. Good stuff.

Also, Halo 2 will support XBOX Live for internet multiplayer.

Maybe this will have DTS, just like Vice City.

Considering *every* XBOX game has been encoded in realtime DD5.1 since XBOX's inception, I don't think Halo 2 will be any different. In fact, Halo 1 is one of the most impressive gaming surround experiences out there today.

With XBOX's MCPX hardware DD5.1 encoder, a game can have realtime 5.1 throughout with zero graphical hit. On the other hand, for PS2 to support DTS throughout, one of its two vector units (which are largely responsible for PS2's 'power') must be entirely dedicated to encoding 5.1 sound. Therefore, with PS2 a game developer has to lower the graphics quality in order to implement realtime 5.1 sound. Vice City probably could have looked much better and had less slowdown if the 5.1 was not implemented.

Anyway, welcome to the land of realtime 5.1

Totally. I was just telling my brother yesterday that it's too bad that GTA is being developed mainly for PS2 because it could look so much better on the PC or even Xbox. The polygon counts I think are the biggest concern.

I think Vice City looks great, I don't see why people are complaining. Amazing graphics IMO.

I would have liked to have an XBOX version though, for the progressive scan support and for the ability to make your own radio stations. That would have been fucking cool.

I think the main problem people are having is the blockiness of the characters (lack of polys as 1138 mentioned), and the slowdown that occurs. Not that it doesn't look good, just that I think many have come to expect more with some of the graphical stunners released lately. I was stating above that if the devs didn't use realtime 5.1 they probably could have made the graphics look a lot better by using the 2nd vector unit for that instead of sound.

I have beaten GTA3 and 8 hours into GTA:VC and I don't think I ever had a slowdown problem, never even really noticed it.

It might be that I turned off "Trails", I don't know if that helps. I turned it off because I didn't like the blurring effect. It looks much nicer with it off IMO.

As for people looking Polygonal, I guess this is so, but not to the point of total block people like most PS1 games. When you consider all the things on screen at the same time, and the draw distance, I think what they did with VC is amazing.

I play Morrowind on the XBOX and it's draw distance was horrid, and the graphics weren't much better.

even though this thread is about halo2, i will say that i belive that the gta series is not focused on graphics, but gameplay.

The trails and particle effects really bog down the PS2, and by disabling them you can get some fps back.

The only difference being Morrowind's world is about 10,000x bigger than GTA's

Is that what that does? When I played GTA3 for the first time the other day I thought the blurring just made everything harder to comprehend.

If so, thanks for mentioning that Moogle. It'll be a more enjoyable experience next time I play.

But it's possible to do both. Halo did it just fine. And I'm not really bashing GTA. I love playing GTA 3. In fact, I've still got to get around to beating it. I'm just saying, when I've seen the sweet commercial with the Flock of Seagulls song, I sort of cringe when I see the characters moving (like in the disco). They look pretty bad for today's 3D standards.
