Lightbulb GTA alternatives for those without a PS2...

Want a Grand Theft Auto-like game but don't have a PS2? Here are some upcoming 2003 alternatives for XBOX and Gamecube!

True Crime: Streets of L.A. (Activision)

Mafia (Take 2 Games)

Driver 3 (Infogrames)

Have Mafia for the PC. It's total bad-ass! Not quite as free-flowing, but the driving is much, much better.

HB, what video card are you running this game on? I was planning on picking up this title, but I've read on a number of forums that people are having installation and runtime issues, and the developer has stated that they have no intention of releasing a patch (smart PR )

Mafia is coming out for XBOX, Gamecube, and PS2, so you might as well just wait until it comes out for your respective console instead of having to deal with the PC version.

There are two issues inherent with that approach: 1) there's a risk of a lousy port for one or more of the platforms involved, and 2) more than likely the console versions will all retail for ~$50, whereas the PC version can be had for under $30 (if you know where to shop). Chances are by the time MAFIA is released on any console, there will probably be other titles vying for my interest and dollars. For those that have the game running on their PCs, it's one of the better looking games on the market, so for the price, it might be worth a gamble (I would prefer to make a somewhat calculated one). Lastly, if it was developed firstly for the PC, it deserves to be played on a PC (preferably at 1280x1024 or higher )

Exactly, DVDriven. Mafia looks SO good at high resolution on a PC, it will be downright painful to see it all crammed into console resolution with blurry textures.

I like Mafia very much, but I also sometimes find it infuriating. There is so much driving to do, with nothing happening on the way. Some missions have you drive all the way across the city, have a conversation or something, drive all the way back. One mission towards the end has you ride the elevated train for ten minutes, and nothing happens on the way. It gets tedious. And you can't save wherever you want, which I find inexcusable. The last mission gunfight has you battling about fifty guys with no health kits and no saves on the way. One schmo gets a lucky shot with a sawed-off and you're back to the beginning. I'm about ready to throw the CD against the wall.

Still, when it's good, it's VERY good. In spite of everything, I *am* glad I played it. I like it better than GTA3.

PIII 900 Mhz
512 Mb Ram
Geforce3 (not a stoooopid MX flavor)

Next: I really need a big-ass LCD screen. A friend has a 23" flat panel. OMG!! Now that kicks ass.

The only problem I had with installing Mafia was getting the MOMO force feedback steering wheel to work. I was borrowing it, never did work correctly ... I was happy to return that POS.

one more thing about Mafia: better SEXUAL inuendos

Spoiler (Highlight or Triple Click to Read):
You get to walk some hottie home. (I love how she swings her butt while walking.) After you beat the snot out of some thugs, she invites you in. He walks over and checks the bounce on the bed. (I think that was even better than the sex that followed)
