Stuff you need to buy to play on XBOX Live

(You may have some of this already!)
- Broadband Internet Connection (Cable or DSL recommended)
- Cable/DSL modem with RJ45/ethernet jack
- XBOX Live Starter Kit ($49.99)
- Linksys BEFSR41 Router ($55 after rebate)
- Three RJ45 CAT5 Cables (~$10-$15 total)
- Network card** for your computer or laptop/notebook (~$15-$35)

** Note: if you already have your Cable modem/DSL modem hooked up to your computer via an RJ45 CAT5 cable (looks like a phone cable, but a bit wider), or if your computer has a port that looks like this, you don't need to buy a network card. Most computers these days come with network cards built-in.

Connect one CAT5 cable from the cable/dsl modem to the WAN port on the Linksys router, one CAT5 cable from your computer's network card to Port 1 on the router, and one CAT5 cable from the XBOX to Port 2 on the router. That's it! You can see this process step-by-step graphically here:
http://www.xbox.com/LIVE/connect/router.htm

***

How to connect to XBOX Live with no wires
It's a lot more expensive, but you can hook up your XBOX to your cable/dsl modem without any wires. Here is what you need:
(You may have some of this already!)
- Broadband Internet Connection (Cable or DSL recommended)
- Cable/DSL modem with RJ45/ethernet jack
- XBOX Live Starter Kit ($49.99)
- Linksys Wireless BEFW11S4 Router ($107)
- Linksys Wireless Ethernet Bridge WET11 ($107)
- Three RJ45 CAT5 Cables (~$10-$15 total)
- Network card** for your computer or wireless laptop/notebook (~$15-$57)

** Note: if you already have your Cable modem/DSL modem hooked up to your computer via an RJ45 CAT5 cable (looks like a phone cable, but a bit wider), or if your computer has a port that looks like this, you don't need to buy a network card. Most computers these days come with network cards built-in.

Place the wireless router near your computer. Place the wireless ethernet bridge near your XBOX. Connect one CAT5 cable from the cable/dsl modem to the WAN port on the Linksys router and one CAT5 cable from your computer's network card to Port 1 on the router. Connect one CAT5 cable from the XBOX to the wireless ethernet bridge. That's it!

***NOTE: It is currently not possible to connect to XBOX Live via AOL's broadband service. Satellite broadband connections are also unsupported.

THE CHEAP WAY
Instead of buying a router as stated above, you can simply unplug the cable/dsl connection from your computer and plug it into your XBOX. You still need the XBOX Live Starter Kit, however.

Ruined, you may be the person to answer this, since I'm too lazy to find out on my own. Microsoft released a list of compatible ISPs for Xbox Live, but did not list At&T Broadband. They also stated that the list was not all inclusive, but since that's the service I use, I'd rather not have to get a new provider. This list that Microsoft released includes:

Bell Canada
BellSouth Corp.
Charter Communications Inc.
Comcast Corp.
Cox Communications Inc.
EarthLink Inc.,
MSNR
Qwest Communications
Rogers Cable Inc.
SBC Communications Inc.
TELUS Corp.
Time Warner Cable's Road Runner service Verizon Communications.

Any help is appreciated!

AT&T Broadband is supported, and in fact directions to setup AT&T specifically are on the XBOX Live Beta tester's website. So don't worry about it

For other users - even if your ISP isn't on the list, odds are it will work. Microsoft is just trying to make Live setup 1-2-3 for everyone, which is cool.

Capcom VS SNK 2 has full XBOX Live support and is slated for release on 12/10/02. Click here to preorder it.

On a side note, Marvel VS Capcom 2 XBX was slated for November 2002, but was pushed back to March 2003. Odds are they are implementing XBOX Live online multiplayer for that game as well.

Ok Ruined, I have a question.

If I have 2 XBOXES and I get XBOX live, can I go online with both and only one LIVE kit or do I need two? Can I save the configuration file to a memory card like the PS2 and will that make a difference?

Ah, good question. You can only play one XBOX Live account on one console at a time. You can backup your Live account to a memory card, however once you play Live at a friends house, you home account becomes inactive. Once you logout from your friends house, your account becomes "free" again and you will be able to use it at home. Likewise, if you copied your account from one XBOX to a memory card, then tried it on the other XBOX, the first one's Live access would be disabled until you logged out of the second one.

The XBOX communicator also factors in here. If two players are playing on a single XBOX with one Live account (one as a guest), only the person with the Live account can have Voice Chat. The guest will be silent. Microsoft plans to implement pricing structures for family usage (more than one full-featured person at a time per console) from what I understand. Of course, this can be worked around by buying a Y adapter at radio shack and using a cell phone headset for the guest player (this has been confirmed to work).

Being that you can transport around your Live account, you can also protect your account via passcode (string of button entries). From what I understand, though, whenever you want to activate it at another location you need to enter in some personal information to confirm it is actually you attempting to use the account.

Wow, you ARE the XBOX Guru!

I'm dissapointed I can't go live with two boxes at once but I am glad that I can choose an XBOX to go online with. I wasn't sure if the kit 'married' itself to the XBOX you play on.

Yeh, the idea is just that Microsoft doesn't want the same account to be in use simultaneously - this cuts down on hacking, bandwidth gobbling, sharing 1 Gamertag with multiple people, etc. You can go live with two boxes at once, you just need to have two seperate live accounts.

If it's making your mouth water now, once you play it, I will guarantee that you will cave.

OK Mr. Smarty Pants: could you have a pricing schemed scenario (multiple users in the house) over two Xboxes? With IP checking to make sure they're both in the same house?

Do you know what kind of multile user per house pricing they're thinking?

When XBOX Live launches, there will initially be no family plans available, so details on whether you can have two XBOXes on one family plan are sketchy, but based on the way Live works, it is doubtful. I believe the family plans will mainly be designed so that players 2-4 on the family XBOX can use communicators for voice chat and any other features that are not permitted for guests. Since Family plans are supposedly sub-accounts of the primary Live account, if the primary Live account is moved to another machine, the family accounts will move to that machine as well. Likewise, the family accounts probably cannot be accessed unless the primary Live account is on the same machine. Not to mention that Microsoft might not want to get into the business of IP checking with IP spoofers out there. In other words, if you have 2 XBOXes and want to go Live on both, odds are you will need to pay for 2 full XBOX Live subscriptions.

No concrete pricing or plans have been set.

Launch is the XBOX Anniversary, Nov15th. The $50 rate will likely be here to stay for a while.

for one I don't like the xbox as much as the GC
2 the GC controller is better (IMO)
3 I want to help show Nintendo that online can make money
last point I only have an xbox for xbox exclusives cause I'm a nintendo boy and I always will be, just like you ruined are an xbox boy and always will be. and just for future reference don't try and sell me an xbox version if I say gamecube you'll just be wasting time (I'm not trying to be an ass just telling it like it is)

Heh, first I'm not an "xboy boy". I've owned an Atari 2600, Commodore 64, NES, SNES, Dreamcast, XBOX, and numerous PCs. I have have owned a large variety of consoles made by several manufacturers (Atari, Nintendo, SEGA, Microsoft). I don't buy based on brand, as is evident from the above list. Therefore I cannot predict what brand consoles I will be playing 10 years from now.

You may not like the XBOX as much as the GC, and you might like the GC controller better (despite PSO being designed for the Dreamcast controller, whose main button layout is identical to that of the XBOX Controller S), but don't you think it's kind of pointless to play PSO if you can't even chat with your teammates for trading, strategies, etc? In the US, you currently cannot buy a keyboard for PSO, and communication is limited to a few preprogrammed macros and typing on screen via an onscreen keyboard, which takes ages. Sure, you can import a keyboard from Japan, but the majority of people you will be playing with won't be able to chat with you anyway.

I'm not trying to "sell" you anything, as I'm not making any money off the deal, just giving advice on which version looks to offer the best experience. In summary, the fun of PSO is seriously hampered without allowing the online community to easily communicate with each other (I played it on Dreamcast). Even if a GC keyboard is released sometime in the future, it will be an addon, meaning less users will have it, and that you may still have communication difficulties. And, that put aside, voice chat is even more fun than text chat from my experiences. I wouldn't let videogame manufacturer politics stand in the way of getting the version of the game that offers the most fun. You obiously may not heed this advice, but that's fine, as it is your choice anyway, not mine.

The Live EULA states that Microsoft has the right to do so. However, currently they are not doing so from what I have heard.

ruined Im not trying to get into an argument with you, I just meant that we all know that your curent console of choice is the xbox. I wasn't talking about the past or the future I was talking about right now.

sure voice chat is cool but at the same time I don't want to listen to a 12 year old boy complain that I'm better or tell me that I suck (cause really I'm not that good at online games right now). If that person types it it doesn't seem as bad because they don't sound 12. but hey thats just me.

I wouldn't have called you an xbox boy if I had ever seen you say to someone. hey you don't have an xbox well that game will also be on (fill in the console). But I have never hear you say that, if you have and I just missed it I'm sorry.

I will shut up now

That's uncalled for ESPECIALLY in a thread about XBOX LIVE. This thread isn't titled GAMECUBE LIVE.
