Angry Vaporware software

Well, there were plenty of titles that I was excited about getting for the Dreamcast. For starters, there was Chaken. The game was just so hyped up, and had a neat premise to it. It sounded like it could be a killer app for the DC, but it never came to be. Another title i remember reading about, is Space Harrier, based off of an older sega game. I believe there was an arcade game, and the DC was supposed to be a port of it. It's just a pure arcade action game, and it would have been fun to have. I'm sure there were others that i was pumped for, but those two stand out in my mind. I should be happy for what i did get on the DC though, as most of the titles(good titles) would never have seen the light of day on any other system.

So, what titles(on any system/PC) were you pumped for, and then never were heard of again?

There was supposed to be another CASTLEVANIA game somewhere along the line but never came to be.

That was Planet Harriers. I'd completely forgotten about that.

This "art thievery sim" Picassio was supposed to be released for Gamecube around Christmas 2001. It's disappeared into the ether as well.

That game was planned for the Dreamcast as well. Another one I just thought of that had a nice, multi-page preview in the Official DC magazine is Planet Of The Apes. I'm pretty sure it was based off of the original movies, and it would have made sense to release it around the time of Burton's movies. Oh well.

Another title that would have been neat to have.

This one had bad mojo, so I don't mind what happened.

I agree with Joe about Castlevania, there has supposedly been another 2D one coming out for a console for like 5 years... better happen eventually...

Another would be Mario RPG 2 which became Paper Mario... I loved the first Mario RPG and I can only think of how cool an N64 sequel would have been if Square and the big N hadn't had their bitch fight...

Ah, well there's the infamous Resident Evil 1.5. I would have loved to have gotten my hands on that.. not to mention Super Mario 64 2 (which never materialized). I would mention Ura Zelda but that's coming out for GC (in Japan, anyway).

Mother 3 / Earthbound 2 / EB64 / and the many other names it has. I really would've wanted to see this one materialize. I'm not sure why it was canned but I think it had something to do with the 64DD that never came stateside.

Haven't they been working on this since Duke3D? Hopefully by the time this is released I'll have a PC capable of running it.

I am pretty certain that Planet of the Apes game came out on the PC. I think it was canned for the DC because it was to come out late in the system's life, after several delays, so they scrapped it.

There was a Castlevania 3D title for the DC that did get scrapped, it was designed by Konami of America. Other than that, I think all the console Castlevanias since have just been rumors.

3D Castlevania = Bad

There's been rumors of a 2D one forever... even recently when Harmony of Dissonance came out the Director of it said they were looking into another one on PS2...

I remember another one! Years ago, when i was quite a bit younger, i remember reading about a Green Lantern game being developed for the SNES. It looked like a platform, and was based on Kyle Rayner. I was so jealous of the SNES camp because of this game(I was a devout sega child), but the game must have never come to be. THe magazine i read even had a screenshot.

Not really vaporware but I would've killed for this to come to the US. The customization (is that a word) would've equated to many many replay hours. The 64DD coming to the US probably would've hurt Nintendo more than helping them though so . Still, watch some of the videos there. They had me salivating all over again.

[edit: I found the above (again) while looking through IGNs list of N64 games to build up my wish list. While searching I found this review -- click here -- which has moved to the number one slot in my 'top ten funniest reviews' list, beating out Gravity Games: Dirt Vert Bert Girt etc for Xbox.]

Funny shit Ikea...

I haven't heard anything on RPG Maker 2 in quite a while... hope that isn't going to be added on here...

What was the name of that N64 game with the blue guy who could shoot off his body parts? Was that Freakboy? I know that was cancelled after being previewed for like a year...

I think several games were announced for Dreamcast but cancelled when Sega called it quits. The most anticipated cancelled title was Half-Life; I think the Blue Shift PC expansion was originally designed for the DC version.

And don't forget Star Fox 2 for SNES. It was almost finished when Nintendo decided not to release it. Because of special chips, the cartridges would have been expensive to make and Nintendo didn't think sales would repay the costs, since the SNES was on its way out.

You're right about Blue Shift. Even odder, though, is that Half-Life was complete for DC. It was in final beta testing when they scrapped it. So that's why that game is such a dissapointment.

And off subject, but Moogle I disagree that a 3D Castlevania would be bad. I use to believe that after after the N64 game, but anyone who's played Devil May Cry or Rygar will tell you it can most certainly be done, and done well.

Unhappy

I was kinda looking forward to Propeller Arena on the DC and it never turned up domestically. But I think it did get released in Europe or Japan. It was supposed to be an aerial dogfight game (duh!) and it supported online play through the DCs modem! Maybe, someday, it will turn up on the XBox with the online support intact.

Devil May Cry is a good game, I own it, but Symphony of the Night is a better game. Call me old school, but that's how I feel. Maybe a 3D Castlevania wouldn't be "bad", but a 2D would be better.

Of course, I said that about Metroid as well, and Prime kicks ass, so maybe I'm just old and cranky...
