Unpopular but Excellent

We all know the Zelda games are good, the Metroids, the Final Fantasy's, etc. What are your favorite games that are rather unpopular, unknown, and underappreciated? And did I spell underappreciated right?

Top of my list would be Einhander for the PSX which is still probably my favorite shooting game. It was a 2D space combat game that kicked so much old school ass I can't believe it sold like shit.

Another would be Return Fire for the 3DO and PSX which was one of the funnest 2 player games me and my buds ever played at the time. You had to basically capture the flag, but in an all out war setting with tanks, helicopters, whatever at your disposal. It had classical music and good visuals for the time. Great stuff...

Where do you get that these games were ever unpopular? Return Fire is considered a classic by many old enough to remember it, and it sold well enough to garner a sequel at least.

More of a case I think of a game just being forgotten. The Alex Kidd games on SMS were great, but doubt we'll ever see one again, and they all sold well.

I think ICO would fit that bill. It never really sold to it's potential yet it was easily one of the best PS2 games when it came out.

For the Gamecube:

I don't know how well ETERNAL DARKNESS sold but it has been a while since I came home every day and played a game consistently to completion like I did with that game.

And what about PIKMIN?

And I agree with Ru I think SEAMAN was a great (Can you call it a game?) Whatever happened to the PS2 version that was being worked on?

ok i think its safe to say that all of u will probably know what im about to say...........****Shenmue**** & ****Shenmue II****

its true though. these games are very underappreciated. they are 2 games that from what i know didnt sell very well. that is why the series is gonna stop with the 3rd game when originally i think it was going to go to 4 or 5........or maybe more.

I want to try all the others you listed, but these are ones that I'll agree on based on experience.

I'll also raise you for the dreamcast:
King Of Fighters Evolution
SNK Vs. Capcom
JoJos Bizarre Adventure
Marvel Vs. Capcom 1 and 2
Shenmue
It could be said that the Dreamcast was unpopular, but it was definitely excellent. Looks like I'm going to have to get some new DC games

I was unaware Return Fire was popular... I don't remember it getting a lot of notice, but maybe I'm wrong. Einhander definately fell under the radar though.

I thought Shenmue 1 & 2 both did pretty good. Not excellent, but not "unpopular" either.

It's like a whole game dedicated to the most fun parts of Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast. Except the graphics look like Jedi Knight 1.5

It's actually more like Jedi power battles meets MAX PAYNE thanks to the (bullet time like) Slow motion.

You have force powers and can throw your enemies, etc.

Well if you had Obi-Wan for $30 and Jedi Knight 2 for $50 which would you get?

get obi wan, download jedi knight on your computer, OBI was cool, you can push your enemies, pull their weapons, throw your saber, and do a bullet time type deal, remember OBI is third person so it is a different experience then Jedi, i would definately get both if you can, if not, start with OBI, im sure JEDI will go done in price by the time you finish, i believe i posted a OBI review in the Review thread, or ruined did, i think some did

Does it have to be specifically console games?

If so I would like to Medieval: Total War for PC. This poor game has practically gotten no buzz this year inspite of being almost flawlessly executed. If it wasn't for school and Metroid I would be squandering all of my extra time on this game. And this is coming from someone who is new to the RTS genre.

Certainly not... just 'cause I don't play them don't mean they're not good...

i did a few months ago, here is the link.

Strangely, Moogle responded back then and said he rented the game and thought it was "shit."

Ummm... I did? *runs off to check* ... yes, yes I did. I played it in EB, so I must have just said rented... sorry... I guess that makes my statement that I never played it wrong as well... so now I sound like an idiot (yay!)...

I played it in EB, thought it was shit, never REALLY played it because it was only like 2 minutes... yeah... that's it...

Well, Obi-Wan actually uses a modified version of the original Jedi Knight graphic engine (which is both impressive and scary), which is why the graphics are so poor. But, it is more fun than JK2 on the whole, and seems to offer more JK1-like action than JK2, despite JK2 wasting it in the graphics department.

Okay, I played and loved JK1 which is why I wanted Obi-Wan, but it got bad reviews, and like I said, after playing it in EB it seemed like shit. All I really remember about it was that the enemies were all the same model and you couldn't sword fight with them. Still, if it becomes a $20 title, I may pick it up.

I guess since I really liked JK1 I should get JK2, but I'm just not in the mood for another FPS right now...
