The definitive 'must have' list. (Playstation 'one')

(Mainly self-serving) I'd like to create a list of must haves for the PSX, (soon to follow with other platforms.) Also, I should stress, I'd like this list to include as many genres as possible.

My choices are (keep in mind my very limited PSX experience):

  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Metal Slug X

Final Fantasy VII: Before this, the last RPG I came in contact with was Earthbound on the SNES.

***skip next many lines to avoid long winded ramblings***

One night last summer, (and still PSX-less,) I had to babysit for my nephew who recently bought up the PSone and became a faithful FF-ite. I picked up a el cheapo NAKI memory card before heading over there. After some playing of mediocre bargain bin titles I had him bus' out FF7 so I could see what all the hype was about all those four years ago. My casual introduction at 10:00 that night soon turned into 3:00 the next morning. I was blown away. It was mainly the story & characters that grabbed me by the yarbles. I bought the game the next week, disregarding the fact that I have not PSX. Soon after I was handed a trunk load of 'broken' consoles to 'play with' that all ended not being broken. Two of those were Playstations. The next month was just a blur of Clouds, Shinras & Sephiroths. Forty hours of clocked gameplay later, I'm still haven't beaten it.

    ***okay, start reading again***

I haven't been sucked so deep into a game in ages, making this a must have.

Metal Slug X: Classic, simple 2D action. Fun, cartoon-like sprites. Big explosions. Many, many enemies attacking you at once. Just as many continues required to beat the game. Even better with two players.

I bought a PSX this summer so that I could play the Arc the Lad Collection (link goes to my review).

I would also add to the list Tekken 3 (my second favorite fighter of all time, narrowly beaten out by Virtua Fighter 1) and R-Type Delta.

My oh so cool list... by the way IKEA lets just use this instead of my "best game" shit, I like your method better...

Final Fantasy VII - I was already an FF addict from FF2 and thus I was waiting for this game for YEARS. When I finally got it I played day and night for what seemed like weeks, and by the time I was done I had some level 99 characters and every single thing in the game. Truly amazing...

Final Fantasy 8 + 9 - Not as remarkable an experiance as VII, but both are damn amazing games as well. 9 is probably my favorite of the PSX installments.

Metal Gear Solid - An amazingly fun game that felt like a movie more than anything else before it... too bad the sequel sucked and Splinter Cell makes it look like a fanny pack.

Resident Evil 1 + 2 I was bored by the time the third came out, but these two kept me awake playing for a long long time...

And my favorite on the system...

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Simply the best 2D game of all time (sorry Metroid) and a the only non-Final Fantasy game that I have beaten over and over for the fun of it. Beautiful visuals, good story, amazing gameplay. Might be my favorite game of all time...

Castlevania Chronicles was good, but nowhere near SotN or the like... old school baby...

Mega Man 8 was great if you liked the originals... I didn't like the PSX X titles...

Klonoa is a great game on the PS2 but I never played the original...

Chrono Cross and Vagrant Story are good buys... Legend of Mana wasn't that good IMO, but tastes vary...

Never played Loaded or Metal Slug, and I thought Parappa the Rappa was a good rental...

Some others you might want to check out: Xenogears, Parasite Eve 2, Einhander, Siphon Filter... If I think of any others to reccomend to you I will...

    3. Metal Gear Solid
    4. Tekken 3
    5. Metal Slug games
    6. Bust A Groove
    7. Gran Turismo

I didn't like Brave Fencer Musashi that much, but I only played it a little, so maybe it gets better.

    Add to my list:

Return Fire - Fun as hell, especially 2-Player
Tetris Plus - Better than Tetris Worlds IMO
Ape Escape - Great, great fun

EDIT: I can't believe I left Final Fantasy Tactics off this list completely... that game is EXTREMELY good... my second fave after SotN probably...

honestly, I played both on Sega CD... and Lunar 2 for me has been better than any Final Fantasy yet... (I love Final Fantasy tho! Lunar 2 is just better... it has nostalgia tho too, an old GF loved working thru it with me!).

Great anime cutscenes, great characters, a fantastic sense of humor... good stuff in em.

For RPGs... best I can think of in order...

    1 Lunar 2
2 Final Fantasy 6/ US Final Fantasy 3
    3 Lunar 1
    4 Final Fantasy 7
5 Final Fantasy 4/ US Final Fantasy 2
    6 Final Fantasy 9
    7 PC's Morrowind/Daggerfall (tie, loved em both)

Can't think of many more off the top of my head that are as clear cut awesome as the above...

Parappa was great. I need to find that before it gets super-rare. It's hard to get used to though... for a while it was:

The going prices are pretty reasonable on eBay, even the sealed copies. Looks like I'm due for a re-visit down memory lane...

Wish I had an answer. I bought it over two months ago (on sale at KB) and I've yet to load it (along with another dozen or so titles). I'll have to get back to you on this.

I thought Parappa 2 was very weak

Do try UmJammer Lammy if you haven't already though. I think I liked her adventure even better than Parappa's first

I didn't like Lammy either; the gameplay was harder and the tunes weren't as catchy, IMO. I'm still keeping the disc though.

I have the demo of Parappa 2 and it was fun, but mainly the same thing as the first. EGM gave it around a 5 and I agree with that.

Well, it's only like 20 bucks. I think the Parappa appeal lies within the style and not gameplay.

Aw man, all this talk of Parappa is reminding me how much I missed bust a Groove. Same sort of concept, but you dance (but with the controller, not like DDR). That was a sweet.

Bust-A-Groove was and is still the best party game I owned on any platform. It had the coolest characters and the catchiest tunes, and was disappointed that the followup and UNISON on the PS2 didn't live up to my expectations.

I really enjoyed Unison actually, though as a "party game", it obviously wasn't even in the same league as Bust a Groove, with you having to actually "learn the steps" to be effective at any of the songs. I still pull out Unison once every couple of months though, and still have a damn good time

Speaking of party games, and since I don't remember seeing it mentioned here as "essential", I think the PSX game that still dominates the most of my time, especially when people come over, is Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. In my mind, still the best puzzle game ever created, save maybe the original Tetris on linked Gameboys
