SEGA doing online work for Nintendo and Sony

From Planet Nintendo
Quote:
In an announcement made early this morning, Sega.com announced that its signed middleware agreements for PlayStation 2 and GameCube. With this agreement, developers can use Sega.com’s technologies and services to set up online gaming environments for both systems. Specifically, Sega’s Network Application Package (SNAP), is host to a suite of technologies, operation, maintenance, billing, consulting, quality assurance testing, and server hosting with over 100 servers already online.
Looks like I predicted correctly. I always had a feeling Sega would be doing server work for other consoles.

I'm still unclear on what this development means. If I read it correctly (the entire press release, not just the above quote), it would mean that some future online games will be cross-compatible between PS2 and Gamecube. Which would be very cool.

While I don't understand all the implications either, to say the Sega is actually doing any deveopment for those is a bit of an overstatement. All they did was lisence their middleware to the companies. All that is is a suite of software tools that aid in network programming and tasks. Sega really isn't doing anything perse, other than selling them their toolset
