Classic Sega Will Rise Again

IGN has this story about how Sega has licensed out many of their classic titles to this third party company who will be porting them over to the PS2. But not just ports, they are updating the grpahics, osund, etc. Titles include the Phantasy Star series, Space Harrier, and more! Here's a screenshot of the original Phantasy Star's remake. Now mind blowing, but definitely 16-bit or better looking. I'm impressed so far...

So far these remakes are only for the PS2, but they hinted they may come to GC and XBOX as well.

In the same vein, SEGA is releasing a number of Dreamcast ports to XBOX (nothing all too great though) around the same time.

That looks more like a mock-up than a screen shot. Nevertheless, cool though.

As an append to elwood731's post, here's a link to the IGN article, which includes all of the games scheduled for release (a *very* impressive list indeed ), as well as makeover details. This is welcome news for someone such as myself, who never owned a SEGA console prior to the Dreamcast, but still enjoyed playing Genesis and arcade classics. There's a possibility that these remakes may also make it to other consoles, and although there hasn't been a formal stateside release announcement, I'm just ecstatic at the fact that SEGA's taking the initiative to help PS2 owners revisit the past.

I am really enjoying the retro streak that the PS2 has been in recently, with updates of Shinobi, Contra and Rygar as examples.

Here are the selections for the XBOX's CoolCool brand:

Rent-A-Hero No. 1
Blue Stinger Premium Cut
Dynamite Dekka 2 (Dynamite Cop in N.America)
Illbleed

I'll stick with the PS2, thanks.

Whoa, is that Xbox list for Japan only? If not, that's kind of exciting, as Rent a Hero never came to the US on Dreamcast. I always wanted to play it. I'd like them to redo that one where you basically played the president of Sega too, and tried to get the company back to the top

SegaGaGa. That game was super-cool. It had cool promo stuff to go with it (variant Dreamcasts, Mem. Cards, etc). Just another innovative original idea Sega came up with in their later years.

I wonder if they would ever think of remaking Kid Chameleon. That game was awesome for the Genesis
