Thumbs up New Doom 3 screenshot

You can also find a new interview with id's lead designer, Tim Willits, to discuss this highly anticipated game.

WOW, that maybe the best graphics I have ever seen

What will the system requirements be for this game? I might have to buy an Xbox to play this bad boy since they are supposedly porting it to it.

No amazing red x here, just a finely detailed Doom 3 screenshot. It looks great, too bad it wont look anywhere close to that on my PC.

Wow that looks pretty good, what kind of video card do you need to see graphics like that?

I love this story. I can only hope the whole game is so amazing!

From the above linked interview...
Quote:
I've had a number of great experiences recently, but one of the best happened just the other day and really brought together a bunch of the cool new elements in Doom III. I was making my way through one of the more lab-type areas of the game and started down a hallway. As I got about halfway down the hall, one of the zombie scientists approached from the next room. I was low on ammo and health and wanted to lure him down the hall, away from any other enemies in the next room, so I retreated to the previous room and waited. As he moved down the hallway, the light behind him was much stronger, so he cast a long shadow that moved ahead of him--I could see him coming just by his shadow. When he was finally in front of me, I shot him square in the chest with the shotgun. He just happened to be standing in front of a window to another room, and the force of the shotgun blast blew him back through the window and down a short set of stairs. We utilize "rag doll" physics on our characters, so his body tumbled perfectly down the stairs to the bottom. It was one of those moments where you just say, "Wow!"

You'll probably need something close to a Radeon 9700 or a GeForceFX 5800, PLUS a 2 ghz processor to run the game with all the goodies (basically, the real-time lighting and shadows) on. It's unclear at this point how well the game will run on a GF-FX 5200 or 5600, but I wouldn't expect greatness since they are both hardware crippled versions of the 5800 (especially the 5200).

I imagine the XBox version of the game will have to have quite a few of the niceties turned off in order to spit out decent framerates.

I saw the game at QuakeCon 2002 last year, and it really is fantastic.

I wonder what they will say the system requirements will be? You'll need the best graphic card on the planet to get those graphics like those in the shot. Scary good.

On a tangent, what do you guys think would be a good cheap video card to get to run this and "future similar technology" games on with a decent framerate? I only have a 1.4ghz Athlon, but that ancient Radeon 7000 won't play for shit(no HW T&L).

All I see is the red x as well, even when I follow the links all the site has for Doom pictures are red x's.

Hard to say right now. It's best to wait until the game comes out, because by then prices will have fallen further on cards like the Radeon 9700 Pro and the GF-FX 5800. And by that time cards like NVIDIA's NV35 will have hit the shelves, driving prices on older cards even further down.

I also have a 1.4 Athlon, but with a GF3 Ti 200. I'm waiting on buying a new video card until Doom3 is closer to shipping. But something tells me that a budget card isn't going to cut it this time around, and I'll probably have to spend close to $200 to get decent performance.

I personally wouldn't run the game on anything less than a 2 ghz machine using a Radeon 9700 Pro or better, or a GF-FX 5800 or 5900 (the 5200 and 5600 are hardware crippled versions of the 5800, blech). Obviously you can run it on less impressive hardware, but to get a decent framerate AND get the benefits of dynamic lighting, you'll want power, power, POWER.

id and NVIDIA let a few sites run benchmarks using a Doom3 demo. See HardOCP, Tom's Hardware, and Anandtech.

DOOM3 MULTIPLAYER REVIEW!!

Oh. My. God.

As a fan of multiplayer Quake3, this one has me, to use an antiquated term, creaming my jeans. Sweet Mother of Beezelbubba, this game has my hopes very, very high.

I pray to the Almighty Carmack it lives up to my expectations.

I am trying SO HARD to care about this game, but between Half-Life 2, Deus Ex 2, and Halo 2, I just can't be assed to. I am so apathetic to Carmack and his wares at this point.

The Gamespot preview mentions that they were running at a whopping 640x480 with the latest NVidia card. That' doesn't inspire confidence that I'll ever own a computer fast enough to run it.

The X-Box is a powerful *console*, but many have stated that you'd need at least a 2gig+ processor and an ati 9700 or equivalent just to experience everything they're putting into it. To have max settings and
high res with smooth playback, they're talking 3gig+. This game is
gonna push even top of the line PCs when it comes out.

For the X-Box port I'm sure it'll look great, but it won't come even close to the revolutionary visuals high-end PCs will have. But hey, when you're comparing a $200 machine vs. a pc that would cost around 3 grand, do you really have anything to be jealous about?
