I just read this morning that Microsoft is in talks with the developers of Doom III hoping to get them to agree to make it an Xbox exclusive title for at least the first six months after it's released this December.
I know there are a lot of exclusive PC Gamers that are gonna shit on themselves if this comes true. For me I could care less either way. I have both platforms at home. Any thoughts? |

I doubt Carmack would ever consent to Xbox-only and not PC, since that was ID's birth platform, and if he DOES make it Xbox-only, he'll be dead the night he makes the decision (by assassins).

Where did you read this? Can you provide a link?
The only way that I would see this as being possible would be that if ID is running way behind on development due to hardware compatibility issues. By releasing it on the XBOX first, they get rid of any hardware issues and can still say they made their dates. |

I heard about this from Wired magazine a few weeks ago, and it looks like the story has mutated into something it's not.
Microsoft approached id with the idea of making it an Xbox exclusive. That's all the information that's out there. Here's some info: http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/boa...threadid=41106 It isn't going to happen. Go back over the last 20 years and read all you can about id Software, and you'll discover there's no way John Carmack will ever give rights for any of his games to come out on a Microsoft exclusive product first. There are also mumblings that Xbox may be the only console Doom 3 is released on. That's believable due to the type of hardware one will need to run Doom 3, but there's no confirmation of this either. Regardless, I assure you Doom 3 will be released for the PC first, and anyone that says otherwise has no concept of what is important to id Software. -HM |

Here's the Wired article:
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.05/doom.html And here's the appropriate quote: "But id could pocket some cash from Microsoft. Redmond keeps calling, trying to convince the company to release a version of Doom III for the Xbox: 'We're being offered a pretty significant amount of money to sit on it until an Xbox port is done,' says Carmack. id hasn't announced a decision yet." -HM |

ID actually did announce a decision at E3 yesterday.
Doom III is console-exclusive to XBOX, but the PC version will also come out. The PC version will come out first, then afterwards the XBOX version. Doom III was showcased during Microsoft's XBOX press conference, and the XBOX and PC logos were shown at the end of the Doom III trailer.

Carmack will port it to any computer system that'll run it. He's that kind of guy.
As for consoles, I could see it being Xbox exclusive. OTOH, could it even make it on any other console without some big trade offs?

I suspect it will be difficult to port over the current Doom 3 feature set (i.e. the dynamic lighting) to Playstation 2 and GameCube, and console fans may have to wait for the NEXT generation of systems if they don't want to buy the Xbox version.

Unlikely it'll come out on the other 2 consoles, especially the Playstation. But we'll see.
And the December date is a guess. I love it when magazines and stores like EB and GameStop just make things up, because there's been no official release date from id. Although it's a very good guess, since their last two games (Q2 and Q3) came out for the holiday season. -HM |
