Four new online-ready EA games.
"Electronic Arts surprised even us today with this afternoon's announcement unveiling four non-sports games that will be online-ready this fall for PlayStation 2: The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, The Sims Busting Out, Need for Speed Underground, and Medal of Honor Rising Sun."
"Return of the King, The Sims, and Medal of Honor enable players to additionally vie using the USB headset for instant voice communication." I might have to spring for the network adapter sometime in the near future. |

Wow, that's pretty cool. Those are some unique online games. But Need for Speed? Wasn't that already announced as an online game?

Word is that EA will be charging $10 a year for the EA online service for PS2 that will enable the online portions of those games in addition to the price of the Network Adapter. (Apparently they want to do the same for XBOX Live on top of the XBOX Live fee, and MS didn't want them to, which is why they are still negotiating)

Word is that the Network Adapter is $40, so with EA's yearly charge, that would bring the price up to $50, which is the price of the old Xbox Live kit. Well, now (or very soon) if you want to get on Xbox Live it'll cost you $70, which leaves you an extra $20 to buy a good USB headset.
So far no one has charged monthly/yearly fees to play a PS2 game, with the exception of Everquest Online Adventures. So even if EA charges $10 a month to play all their online-ready games it'd still be less then Xbox Live's $50 yearly charge.I'm not knocking XBL at all here. I have no problem paying $50 a year to play online. But there's no need to bring such a negative outlook on PS2's online system. Last edited by IKEA_boy : 09-13-2003 at 06:33 PM. |

As far as the games the only ones that really interest me are LOTR and MOH (kind of). I'm curious as to how the only play in LOTR will work...

Yah I agree on the interesting games in the selection... but the one thing that I dont like about PS2 online games is they are P2P, not on localized servers like xbox games. Also there is the whole issue of having ppl that are on dialup playing with the broadband ppl, and that makes alot of lag to go around.

I may be wrong here, but don't a lot of the online PS2 games only allow broadband people, or only allow broadband people to play together and the dialup people to play together? I know some have done this at least.

I want Tony Hawk's Underground on the PS2 for the face mapping feature. You send Neversoft a picture and they put it online, available through the game for download, to map on to your custom skater.
Monster Rancher 3 does that too but I'm pretty sure that you use a digicam, (Sony brand of course,) to get the pic to your memory card. |

Seems like the perfect use for the EyeToy.
Remember when Perfect Dark was going to use the GB Camera to map your face during multiplayer? Rare had the feature working and everything. Then at the last moment Nintendo removed the feature because of all the school shootings. I can see their point, can you imagine a parent walking in and seeing Jimmy shooting all his teachers on a videogame? Silly that someone would complain, but I understand their stance.
