Xbox Hacks in Castle Wolfenstein.

I just got back from a session of RTCW. All is well. I was playing for a good hour before the server shut down. So I joined another game and I'm greeted with an endless flow of air strikes. I asked the kid playing on my side and he said "it's a hack. It's a virus." So I go back to spectator where some of my teamates from the previous session are sitting. They explain to me that this is a "virus" that keeps your green bar from depleting. Once you join a game with it, you're infected and every game you host will be infected. You can get rid of by joining a non-infected game though.

I quit, mainly because it's late, partly because I was a little pissed off. I'm going to see if I can find more info on this before I head to bed.

Thumbs down Poor design on Activisions' part - but it can be fixed

Unfortunately Activision didn't do the best job in designing RTCW's online security, and this isn't the first time it was "hacked." Prior to this time, by editing a cached file on the hard drive, a player could change the color of his name to one or many different colors. Now, someone has simply found a different file that edits the parameters of the server. For some reason, the XBOX version contains all the console commands from the PC version even though there would be no reason for a user to utilize them (you know, like using the ^ key in the PC version and typing in bind blah blah blah, etc). All of the "hacks" you are seeing are actually customizable server options the developers programmed into the game for the PC version and failed to remove for the XBOX version.

The main problem is that RTCW in this case fails to check the integrity of files before going online, so someone can edit a configuration file offline with a modchip, then go online without a modchip (but still with the edited file) and cause problems. This can easily be avoided by RTCW simply checking the contents of cached files prior to going online to ensure everything is OK (MechAssault, for instance, does this).

This can be easily patched, and hopefully Activision will do a better job with security in future XBOX Live games.

The only "hopefully" I have is that Activision will fix this via a patch. RTCW is quite possibly the only online FPS I've ever enjoyed and if I start seein this all over the place the game is dead to me.

I haven't seen any other XBOX Live game with fixable glitches (i.e. motoGP track jump, NFL 2K3 infinite pause, PSO shop dupe, killing bots in UC for high score ranking, etc) go unfixed, so I don't see why RTCW would be the exception. Don't worry about it, just take a break for a week or so

Virtually every online game gets "hacked" or cheated in somehow at some point. In this case, it's more of an opening up of the PC version's online options than a hack - if you had PC RTCW, the "hacked" servers you see on XBOX Live would be commonplace on the PC, as these options were purposely put into the game. However, due to XBOX Live's functionality it should obviously be patched ASAP, and I'm sure it will be.

The hacking isn't too widespread. It's actually kind of fun. I was in one game the other night and the host was changing gravity, speed, etc. It's not something I want to do everytime I play but it's fun to fuck around every now and then.

So... um... hoorah for hacks. *ahem*
