In case you haven't read elsewhere, the source code of Half Life 2, HL1, Counter-Strike, Steam, & Havok have been leaked all over the net. Apparently Gabe's machine had internet access, and he got a custom trojan a hacker planted in his email. (Rather odd that you would use internet on a computer that contains precious source code). Anyway, the code was in full, included authentication codes for Steam (HL2's pay content delivery system) and full network code for Half Life 2.
What this means is that all games using the Half Life 2 and Havok engines for multiplayer will now be exploited to all hell cheatwise on the PC unless the source is recoded, which is being done right now. Half Life 2 will see a Holiday 2003 release if we are lucky, otherwise it could be pushed back to 2004 because of the leak. In addition, you might want to be wary using your credit cards over Steam as the system's protection is now plain as day to hackers and could probably be busted open relatively easily. Even if it is recoded, I would still be doubtful of the security. Bad news for Valve. Hopefully this won't affect the XBOX release of this game, but they have their work cut out for themselves if they don't want the online multiplayer to be a joke. Not to mention that the code and techniques they spent all this time developing are now readily downloadble over filesharing networks, irc, usenet, etc... Significantly devaluates the HL2 engine. So Valve is in a tough position now; either recode major parts of the engine which will take months, or release now and try to fix all the exploits later. If they do the former, they may have to compete with Carmack's Doom 3. If they do the latter, many may lose faith in Valve. Rock and a hard place.

You look at it from a bad way, which i can see some of your points being valid... but look at it like this
If the sourcecode of HL2 is leaked, then that will give home developers some stuff to work with and we may end up seeing some kickass games made from it (not for retail of course). That was a dumb move by valve though heh |

Do you all give any credence to the theory that it's a "fake" leak by Valve, a sort of trojan for the trojan-makers to a) generate publicity, and b) encourage (and possibly track?) the hacking community by offering a false resource?
You have to admit... Hacking the CEO's email...? To get to his personal machine where all of the source files are...? Gabe himself is coding this stuff? Sounds a bit unlikely to me... |

Unbelieveable as it is, it was just a dumb move by the developer.

Its not a fake, Ive seen the code, and the compiled programs. Everything should work in theory, if there were textures and maps included, which was rumored to be leaked also (a 1.4gb archive in addition to the source which was a few hundered megs)
