I'm strapped for cash right now, otherwise I'd be picking it up ASAP. I love the Castlevania series, and I have high hopes for this game. So far it seems like the reviews are pretty positive, so that's plus.

Not unless it is good and it comes out on the big black box. Konami's track record for the past year actually hasn't been too hot on new, innovative games that are fun to play so we'll see how this turns out.

The lead designer said they chose PS2 because it had the biggest Japanaese market, and worldwide market to boot. Castlevania is huge in Japan. He said he had no interest in porting it, even to the GameCube, which actually has a Japanese base of fans.
So sorry folks, it won't be hitting other systems more than likely.

Well gamerankings combined score for the game was around a high 80 percentile. Personally, i believe the game is the greatest 3-D castlevania to date. Though im not sure how it stacks up against the kick-ass 2-d Castlevanias. Im getting the game a "special" way, so im not worried about being dissapointed.

I picked it up... aside from a few idiotic jump puzzles, the game is just fantastic.

I got it this past weekend. I feel the same. Aside from the dumb ways you have to jump, this game is absultely great. I've been a fan since the original Nintendo and this one is one of the best ones.
Question to all Castlevania fans - Why is everyone so hellbent against the use of 3D graphics on this? Why only 2D? I know nearly all have been in 2D, with the exception of the NES64 ones - but what's the big deal about having this in 3D? They did an outstanding job with it. One gripe on it though. They do not let you change to first person or let you pan around so really can't see what goes on behind. But this has been one fabulous play so far. |

First Impression
Well I picked Lament up Saturday, and so far I'm not too impressed. So far it just seems like a sub par version of Devil May Cry with a whip. Keep in mind that I'm only an hour or two into the game so it should get deeper. One part that disapoints is that theirs no "level up" system like the previous GBA games and Syphony of the Night. I loved the "level up" aspect in the prevoius games and I'm heart broken that its been dropped. Other low points include the enviroments seem "cookie cutter". Most of the rooms & halls are the same basic handful of shapes. Though the castle is finely detailed, a lot of the rooms basic shapes are the same as prevoius rooms with only the funiture and other small enviromental items moved around. There are some unique rooms, but so far their few and far between. Another disapointment is according EGM's recient reveiw the castle is not interconnected like previous installment's, and their are hardly any special items to search for. Basicaly EGM states the you start the game almost all abilities and your pretty much as strong as you can get. It's not like Syphony were you start out weak and only able to get to certain areas, but by the end of the game you one BAD MOTHER.
There are some good points though. The graphics are pretty sharp(for a PS2 game), and the control is nearly perfect. The sound is great and the music is fantastic since the same guy that did Syphony's score did Lament's. The fighting system is pretty deep with many combo's and magical attacks to learn. Also the standard secondary items like Holy water, axe, cross are still very usefull when your in a pinch. The enemies so far have been varied and their AI is somewhat challenging, but keep in mind so far these a low level monsters. One thing I don't like (and never like) about the enemies is that they spawn out of the ground, instead of (my prefered) already up to no good when you enter a room. All in all I'm having a good time, but would recommend a rental first. Well I guess I better get back to evil Walter's castle.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this, but when Playstation 2 came out, I thought I remembered reading that the makers of Castlevania had no plans of making a game for the Playstation 2 platform. And this is why or how Devil May Cry got created. Kind of like Dark Cloud being a copy of Zelda.
I do like Devil May Cry, but I remembered when I got it the first time, I couldn't help bu thinking it was too much like a Castlevania game. If only the Castlevania folks jumped on the ball and got a game out a few years earlier. |
