How's the grappling system? I used to like the old N64 WWF games for their grappling system.
I don't watch wrestling anymore but I still want to check this game out, it looks good.

The legends are kind of a joke, though. Ted Dibiase, sure, but Hillbilly Jim? Ugh. And still no Mick Foley, which is a disappointment. The season mode is great, though. It's definitely worth checking out. Spend an hour or so with it, and you'll probably be hooked. |

Thanks Frank for the heads up on the grappling system. I hated the smackdown for the ps1 but I'll give this new one a shot. Sounds fun.

After having a couple nights with this, I gotta give it an unqualified recommendation. I'm loving it. Easily the best since 'No Mercy', and while it doesn't quite have the perfect, simple symmetry of the 'No Mercy' engine, it plays great on its own terms. The graphics are surprisingly good for the PS2 (Austin looks amazing), the sound adequate, and the season mode wholly satisfying (I've sent two rivals out on stretchers already). Lots of innovation here, with a brilliant submission system, above average AI, well-executed match types, and just an all-around cohesiveness that's been sorely lacking in every single wrestling game since the last generation of consoles.
My only gripes are the roster omissions and a somewhat lacking CAW feature. And I wish you could edit the wrestlers' appearances without copying them; I've been meaning to give Kurt Angle hair. Minor complaints, to be sure. Check this out, everybody. It'll make you a believer again. |

I really wish they could things together on just one wrestling game each year. I've said it before, but that would be so nice. And Frank, your comments about the CAW and altering included wrestlers made me consider how great having online features in a wrestling game could be. Not to simply play, but up update rosters with new wrestlers, or change wrestlers' appearnace and such. Season modes could be extended with new plot twists that happen each week or something. That's really the type of game that could use downloadable online content more than most.

That's a great idea, downloadable content. They should've thought of it. Of course, the PS2's online support is a joke. I just don't think we're going to see any meaningful use of online features for games on this generation of consoles (aside from basic head-to-head kind of stuff). Even the downloadable content on Xbox games is more gimmicky than anything, and the XSN deal only works for the shittiest of sports games. But implementing what you're talking about for wrestling games would be incredible, and definitely something they should consider.
The sick irony of all this is that the longer it takes for them to get their shit together and create a definitive wrestling game, the fewer the wrestlers that I recognize end up in the game. I didn't even recognize the fellow on the cover of this one (though I vaguely remembered him from Raw 2). Yeah, they really need to dump the Raw and Wrestlemania, focus on Smackdown, and port it over to the other consoles. Raw 2 was an embarrassment compared to Here Comes The Pain, and while I haven't played the latest Wrestlemania, the first one was a total loss. The latest Smackdown is so far beyond its "competion" that it pretty much makes them obsolete. |
