GameBoy Classic NES Series

From IGN.com

"It's Official: Classic NES Series
All of the details on Nintendo's upcoming retro packs!

March 26, 2004 - It's been rumored and speculated on for weeks, but today Nintendo has exclusively revealed to us the details on the US equivelant of the Famicom Mini series.

The collection will be called Classic NES Series, and will begin as a limited edition NES Game Boy Advance SP as well as a line-up of eight classic games released during the Nintendo Entertainment System days of nearly 20 years ago.
The NES Game Boy Advance SP will feature a very unique color scheme that matches the original NES controller's look. It will, of course, play any Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance game.

Official art from Nintendo of America

Nintendo will release eight games for starters, all accurately emulating the NES games from the mid 80s: Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., Excitebike, Ice Climber, Xevious, and Bomberman. Each game in the series will be priced at $19.99, and will be packaged in a standard Game Boy Advance box featuring the classic artwork of the original game.

"I mean, Donkey Kong and Pac-Man? These are, like, the best games ever," says Perrin "Mallrat" Kaplan, Nintendo of America's vice president, marketing and corporate affairs. "And if you aren't just dying to get your hands on the gnarly new Classic NES Limited Edition GBA SP, you're a total dweeb." Yep, that's a real quote, folks.

The games and system will launch on June 7th in the US.

-- Craig Harris"

The VP of marketing goes by the nickname "Mallrat"?

"Gnarly"? "Dweeb"?

Good lord... what an anachronistically quaint way to introduce a retro handheld. It's still, like, totally lame, but whatever. Shuh! Retro gaming is owe-kay, I guess, but I wanna see more tech, not less! Gag me with a spoon, alright? How many teenage gamers are going to look at the VP of marketing's nickname, and be, like, "MALLRAT! I spend all my time in a mall bitching about how there's nothing else to do, but once that guy gets all that money doing vice-presidenty things and earning a bazillion dollars more than my $5 allowance, he still can' think of anything better to do than hang out at the mall! RAD!! I can't wait to study hard so I can be a vice president, too!"

Okay, I'm blowing it a little out of proportion - it was a silly joke. But, man, was it lame.

$19.99 for Excitebike? Are they high?

No thanks. I'll stick to my town in Animal Crossing: Hackedville.

I definitely like the look of the new gameboy but I already have an SP and don't feel the need to spend the dough.

I can't believe the price point on the classic collection. I just can't see shelling out 20 bucks for games that are almost twenty years old. They should be doing these as compilations not individual games.

I'll pass on these. I already have Pac-Man in the Namco collection, Super Mario Brothers for the Gameboy color. $20 for the 3 level Donkey Kong? Maybe if they released the full version, at $15. Just maybe.

Or perhaps if they would release a multi-pack cartrdige with all the games. I'd pay $30 for that. Otherwise, no deal.

Hey, that's to be expected. I never said other GBA games were a good deal. But considering the depth of each game, there's a hell of a lot more than $10.00 difference between the two. Not to mention the fact that all these games are available in 'Animal Crossing'.

Of course, I'm not much of a portable gamer. I don't know how the hell anybody plays 'Metroid' on a two-inch screen.

Why not just buy a real NES with a whole stack of games off eBay for $25? I'm with Frank on the portability issue - have to stay true to your school, which is keeping your ass on the sofa until some dumb ass trips over the cable & yanks the controller from your hand.

Oh, the things you can accidentally reveal if you spend too much time on the 'File...

I'll admit, I picked up Animal Crossing, but only to get access to the NES games. Before we knew it, we soon found ourselves addicted, sucked into a vortex of snooty pigs, mean old gorillas, and Tom Nook. We were up all hours of the night fishing, looking for ghosts, and hoping my neighbors would wake up so I could do them favors. It gave us a whole new reason to look forward to my birthday. In fact, New Year's Eve, 2002 will forever be known as the Animal Crossing New Year's, because Mrs. Gunn and I insisted that we be whisked from a friend's party back to our GameCube so we could see the Animal Crossing New Year's celebration.

We still catch flak about that.

That's almost exactly what happened to me. I played every day for at least three months. I payed off all of my debt by playing the "stalk market" and soon after I headed out on a quest to collect everything in the catalog. I even spent at least $100 on Animal Crossing e-Cards.

Eventually, I burnt out and traded the game to brian. :p I did make a decent wad off the e-Cards though.

(I should mention that I do own this game again. I bought it at EB when they had a 2 "player's choice" for $25 sale.)

Did you guys get *all* the NES games? Some fella I met online had cracked the game; I bought a memory card off him with a town on it that had every NES game in 'Animal Crossing', including Punch-Out, Zelda, and Super Mario Bros. That alone makes Animal Crossing worth keeping.

You still have that memory file? I might have to grab Animal Crossing after all, even though I have no idea what it's about.

Unfortunately, Animal Crossing doesn't let you copy its save files. I got it from a nice fella from the GameFAQs board, free of charge; he had it all worked out, something about hacking between the Japanese version and the American version. I can see if I still have his email address.

You can also access the games if you have an Action Replay.

ETA: I dug up his email address. Anybody who wants it, PM me, and I'll think about giving it to you (for the sake of this poor guy's privacy).

For a month or so there, I spent more time picking videogame fruit than I did talking to friends and family.

NZN, Animal Crossing is the perfect family game. The game is limitless if you have someone else regularly playing too.
