Capcom announces Street Fighter Anniversary Collection

PlayStation 2 compilation will feature Hyper Street Fighter II and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike in a single package.
Street Fighter fans got a one-two punch of good news today when Capcom announced it will release the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection. Created to celebrate the franchise' 15 years and 27 million copies on the market, the collection will contain both Hyper Street Fighter II and a PlayStation 2 port of the previously arcade-only Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.

Ironically, Hyper Street Fighter II is itself a compilation--of sorts. Released in Japan in December, the game takes all the characters from arcade classics Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II Champion Edition, Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo and combines them into a single 2D, PlayStation 2 title. Players can mix and match the characters in three different modes: single-player arcade, two-player versus, and training, which lets players perfect their skills against programmable opponents.

The game also includes a Gallery Mode which provides access to character intros and backgrounds, soundtrack selections, and images from the Street Fighter II series. While the Japanese release of Hyper Street Fighter II also contained the Street Fighter anime movie, Capcom makes no mention of it being included in the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection. Calls to Capcom had not been returned as of press time.

Released in arcades in 1999, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike features nearly 20 characters, including karate sensei Makoto and famed martial-arts master Chun Li. Besides offering the same three modes as Hyper Street Fighter II, the PlayStation 2 port retains 3rd Strike's gameplay systems. Its Grade Judge System grades players' technique at the end of each match, while its Progressive Hit Frame System, which provides for more realistic fighting.

According to Capcom, the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection will be released "this summer," and its rating is still pending.

I would agree, IKEA, but Dreamcast already has Third Strike and a Japanese import of probably the best console version of Super Street Fighter II X.

Such a shame it doesn't include the Alpha games; then I'd say they should give it a Dreamcast release.

However, we need an ultimate collection (added five more):
Street Fighter
Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II Champion Edition
Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting
Super Street Fighter II
Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Super Street Fighter II X Grand Master Challenge
Street Fighter Alpha
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Street Fighter III: Third Strike (which also includes SFIII and SFIII: 2)
Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter
X-Men Vs. Street Fighter
Marvel Vs. Capcom
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2
Street Fighter EX
Street Fighter EX 2
Street Fighter EX 3
Capcom vs. SNK
Capcom vs. SNK 2
Super Puzzle Fighter II
That one fighter based on Puzzle Fighter (can't remember the name)

I missed a few games:

Holy sweet shit, that would be the single greatest video game set EVER!!!

Well minus the EX games, those are poop.

*sighs* No Alpha 3, eh? That's a damned shame. Guess I'll stick to my slow-ass PSOne version.

The only way this would get me excited is if were going online. My friends aren't much of a challenge to me anymore. I need new blood.

Pre-E3 2004: Street Fighter Goes Live
Capcom gifts players with Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on Xbox Live.

May 07, 2004 - Capcom Entertainment announced today that Street Fighter Anniversary Collection will not only appear on Xbox, it will appear on Xbox Live this fall 2004. That's right, as part of Street Fighter's 15-year anniversary, Capcom is bringing this massive 2D fighting compilation to the big black box.

The compilation comprises Hyper Street Fighter II and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, which includes the entire contents of the Japanese anniversary disc, Hyper Street Fighter II. And players can get online for one-on-one fights for endless competitions of the classic 2D arcade brawler.

Hyper Street Fighter II gives gamers the opportunity to play as any of the fighters from Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II Champion Edition, Street Fighter II Hyper Fighter, Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo. So, imagine fighting as Ryu or Ken from Street Fighter II with the more advanced Ryu or Ken from Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and you'll get the picture.

Hyper Street Fighter II features three game modes, Arcade mode, where you face off against AI opponents to fight the final boss; Vs. Mode, in which gamers fight mano a mano; and Training Mode, where they train. Gallery offers each game's introductions and their corresponding music tracks.

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike offers up 19 playable fighters including Makodo, Q, Twelve, and Remy. And making a cameo appearance (is it really any surprise?) visit is Chun Li.

This game also offers three game modes, Arcade Mode (a direct conversion from the arcade), Vs. Mode, and Training Mode. It also enables players to evaluate their performances in the Grade Judge Match, participate in an interesting Progressive Hit Frame System, perform Super Arts Moves, and confront enemies using a Leap Attack.

IGN will deliver more news on Street Fighter Anniversary Collection in the near future.

Bah. The UK doesn't get SFIII, we only get the animated movie free. They should definitely release a complation of the Alpha games too, instead of endlessly rereleasing the original SFII/SSFII games. The Alpha series rocked!

How about directly crapping on Kaillera for having lag even when I have a 10mbps downstream and 1mbps upstream? Or its lack of voice chat? (Please don't try to push el-sucko TeamSpeak on me) Or its lack of ICQ-like friends list functionality? Or its crappy, semi-stable interface? etc, etc, etc
