The new FPS game, painkiller, which is pretty awesome if you've played the demo, has some major, major problems. The CD doesn't play in a whole slew of CDROM drives, from Lite-On to Plextor to Pioneer, and even if it does play, if you have CloneCD installed on your system (not running, but simply installed), it will refuse to work. You have to uninstall clonecd and disable any cdrom emulation programs to get this game running. That is, if your CDROM drive is compatible with it. A quick glance at Dreamcatcher's tech support forums confirms this with tons of PO'd users who can't even start the game
![]() What happened here is SAFEDISC & copy protection taken to the extreme where it hurts the users more than the pirates. My advice? Pass on the PC version, and wait for the XBOX version. That way, you still get to play the great game but don't support ludicrous overbearing copy protection schemes.

Yeah copy protection is one of those things where I can understand why it is there, and I think some copy protection is necessary. However, if the copy protection scheme goes to far and causes issues when you have a legit copy, that is too much. I would be pissed if I bought a brand new game for $50 or whatever, and then it won't play because I installed clone CD, Alcohol 120%, or whatever program. That is a sure way not to get business either on this release or get a reputation on further releases. I figure that it is alright to copy protect games, however a company doing something like this should reduce the copy protection and eat the loss on file sharing. I have seen this game up on many major file sharing sites (I dunno if it works or not but I assume it does if people are sharing it) so it is not like this amount of copy protection is stopping people from copying this game. It only hurts all those legitimate users who go to the store, buy a new game, and then cannot play it.
Thanks for the warning though.

I'm not into FPS's, however, that really does suck for those that can't play the game after dropping their hard earned cash for it.
Question: Has the Company that makes the game come out publicly to address the issue - if so, what have they said? |
