realistic racing

I don't know about you , but I think that racing games need a clutch, it is just not a fun without it. You could have a steering wheel, pedals, shit, even a H-Shifter, but very few games I know of support a clutch, well more of neutral, who else feels driving games need a clutch?

Despite driving a standard in real life, I'm a bit of a pansy-ass when it comes to racing games. I usually opt for the automatic transmission (especially in Gran Turismo). A wheel with a clutch and a stick might help break that habit.

I don't think hardware manufacturers have perfected the steering wheel itself yet, nevermind a clutch. And I don't think having a clutch on a gamepad is necessary, because you are using a gamepad anyway so 'true' realism is kinda out the door.

I think games with clutches are great. However, I don't think games with a clutch would be fun on a game pad. Games like Race Drivin' in the arcade kick ass because of the clutch. When I am playing with a gamepad, I usually go with automatic because shifting and (I assume as I never heard of a console game with a clutch, just a guess) using a clutch just feels wrong. If I am using a steering wheel then I always choose manual and the game improves drastically. So a clutch with a steering wheel would be great - as long as the pedals weigh a lot so the extra quick push down and release doesn't move the pedals around too much. I am a fan of clutches in racing games, and voted accordingly

You ever played F355 in the arcade? That game is insane. The home versions, although well ported (DC/PS2), cannot simulate the wheel, clutch and shifter. That game owns you in the arcade.

is that the one with the 4-speed and reverse button on the side?

I would love to know why and/or when an XBox cartridge is going to be available.......Maybe MS won't let them...who knows

(oh, and for vid games...I don't need a clutch)

would not be hard for a developer to incorperate it into the PS2

why not, think bout this, in Gran Tourism, you get stuck in the dirt, what can you do? nothing. If you had control of the clutch, rev it up and dump the clutch and your out. The closest you can get to that is to put the e-brake on, rev it up and go, but it doesn't work as well as it should.

To be honest, I dont like Gran Turismo. The game is way too hard for my sorry butt. They make you go thru all these trials and tests before you get to really race and quite frankly, I want a game I can jump into without all that bullstuff. Need for Speed is the kind of racing game I dig. I also like the Project Gotham Racing and Rally Sport games.

Anyway, dumping the clutch at high rpms does nothing but spin the tires and if your in the dirt, it don't do squat (at least in real life ) but perhaps the game has that feature built in so it does help??? If so, I didn't know that. Either way, for racing games, I can do without the clutch......afterall, I'm a pedle-to-the-metal kinda guy assuming I've got good brakes....

i'm sayin that in most racing games if your in the dirt, your stuck unless your at high RPM's

So Iguana Man, do you prefer to drive standard or automatic in real life?

Look at his avatar :p

IMO Gran Turismo is not a very realistic racer anyway, though it does offer a lot of customization options for your car. Ferrari F355 Challenge (PS2/Dreamcast) is probably the most realistic feeling racer with a wheel, and Project Gotham Racing (XBOX) feels the most realistic to me with a controller. PS2's controller also is not very good for racing games due to a lack of analog triggers (the analog shoulder buttons are teribble compard to triggers) - I only buy the PS2 racing games I reallllly want that aren't available on XBOX, like the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series and F355 challenge... Though the "analog" gas control in PS2's TXR is a pain (literally).

I also agree ACT labs should make an adaptor for XBOX as it would also be easy (XBOX uses USB just like the wheel). I can't justify spending that much for a wheel when it only supports 1 out of the 2 major consoles for racing. I think I'll send them an email

I'm too lazy to select either. Period.

Good luck emailing them. I actually called them many months ago and was told "they have no time frame" for the 'Box cartridge.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, adding a clutch to a video game is one more thing I would have to "think" about. When I'm playing, I've got all my concentration going into what's in front of me and how fast I can go without ending up off track. Hell, I almost always opt for the automatic versus manual transmissions in vid games. Why? Well, maybe I suck at racing games but to me they are so damn intense to begin with that it's just one less thing for me to worry about.

And in real life I use both. Which do I prefer? Hmmmm....probably stick. Unless I've got a beer, then it's automatic

sycho, your prayers have been answered.

Microsoft's upcoming Forza Racing racing sim (fall 2004) gives the player the option of using an analog clutch.
