Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing

America Online and Warner Bros. announced today that AOL Instant Messenger service will be integrated into massively multiplayer online game The Matrix Online. This will mark the first game that allows players to link AIM identities into an in-game character, allowing for Matrix players to communicate inside and outside the game.

"Bringing AOL's expansive instant messaging technology to The Matrix Online will tremendously enhance the massively multi-player gaming experience," said Jason Hall, senior vice president, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "Players will now be able to alert other players, via the Internet or their phones, to join them on missions in The Matrix Online and will be able to talk freely while in combat or searching for answers."

The Matrix Online is scheduled for release in late 2004.

It's not voice chat... but... Yeah, that's a marketing ploy. Unless there are benefits I don't know of to being cooperative with someone, it reeks of gimmickyness.

I think it's pretty cool but I'd rather see it available for more than just one game. With Live for example, I'd like to add my friends to my MSN Messenger to see who's playing what before I get on. Sure, you can do that now via Xbox.com but you have to log on, find the links, etc. This way I could just go to my system tray.

This of course would require cooperation between many developers & publishers and is extremely unlikely for the PS2 because each game is not on a universal program, even more so with PC games.

(But yeah, AIM with their marketing. AOL sux0rz!!1! )

That is already planned for the XBOX Live Tsunami upgrade this spring.
