Shadowman: 2econd Coming.
I had the first Shadowman for Dreamcast and loved it (beware, the PS1 version sucks). So when I read reviews that said that the second game was for fans of the series, I was all over it. Here is where the game fails: Though there was a lot of killing in general going in the first Shadowman game, the combat engine was pretty poor, and most of the coolness relied on the sick sound effects and eerie deaths of the monsters. It also was not too bad as the combat was rather simplistic and you could just hit one or two buttons to dispatch the enemy. Now, with Shadowman: 2econd Coming, the game puts a large focus on combat, and the combat engine is even worse this time around. Not only it is it bad now, but it is bad and more complex than it should be - using multiple shoulder and face buttons simply to equip and fire weapons. I spent a good 2 minutes figuring out WTF the equip weapon scheme was, and once I figured it out it was still horribly cumbersome. The devs failed to realize that those who liked Shadowman liked it for its exploration and intense atmosphere, not its combat engine. I also think the 'general' enemies in the first shadowman were creepier than the ones in the second shadowman - while we got what seemed like tortured souls in the first, the second seems to be filled with zombie-movie rejects. I liked the Shadowman himself better in the first one, too - he just seems too "Joe Cool" in this one and his model just looks wacked out. All in all, Shadowman 2econd coming is a big letdown. It's focus on combat makes it a chore to play. STAY FAR FAR AWAY! ![]()
