NPD Reports on First Quarter Video Game Sales

http://www.gamepro.com/gamepro/domes...ws/35137.shtml

From Gamepro....

The NPD Group has released its report of US retail sales for video games in the first three months of 2004. Total sales (encompassing software, hardware, and portable) were pegged at $1.8 billion, a one percent drop from the $1.9 billion reported in the same period of last year. While software saw a 7 percent increase in sales, hardware sales saw a huge fall, with first quarter sales reported at $336 million, a 25 percent drop to the $445 million reported in the same period last year. Portable sales dipped from $157 million to $167 million.

NPD also announced the top selling video games for the quarter, showing that Halo still rakes in solid sales for the Xbox.

The top ten were:

1. NFL Street - PS2
2. Need for Speed: Underground - PS2
3. Ninja Gaiden - Xbox
4. Pokemon Colosseum - GC
5. Sonic Heroes - GC
6. MVP Baseball 2004 - PS2
7. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - GC
8. Halo - Xbox
9. Mario Kart: Double Dash - GC
10. James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing - PS2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interesting to see four GC titles in the mix, and note that software is up for consoles, and only hardware for for Nintendo is up on a year to year basis, though X-Box is stilling selling more then Gamecube. Halo is a monster, still selling after all this time, no doubt due to the 19.99/29.99 price drop. How many X-Box's are there? The ratio of Halo to X-Box's should be 1:1, I mean how can you buy an X-Box and not pick up Halo.

I wouldn't have picked up HALO if it weren't $19.99... good but highly overrated game (and I do mean HIGHLY... one of the reasons I hate OXMagazine is because EVERY issue I have to read something about HALO or Bungie's pure genius... christ).

As for sales... lots of things I could say, but the glaring one is "who the fuck bought Sonic Heroes when EVERY magazine and internet review said it sucks"???? I don't get people...
