Viewtiful Joe comes to PS2

Viewtiful Joe eyeing PlayStation 2

Capcom announces it is porting its popular GameCube brawler to Sony's console.
Hot on the heels of its revelation that Viewtiful Joe 2 will not be a GameCube exclusive, Capcom also announced that it will release the original Viewtiful Joe for the PlayStation 2. Due in stories this coming fall, the Sony version of the game will be rated "E" for Everyone, just like its Nintendo cousin.

“Viewtiful Joe is the most innovative creation in video games, and we are thrilled to bring it to the millions and millions of PlayStation 2 owners,” said Todd Thorson, Capcom's director of marketing. “The combination of a classic side-scrolling brawler and state-of-the-art Hollywood-esque special effects makes Viewtiful Joe a one-of-a-kind game.”

Marketing spin aside, Viewtiful Joe was one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2003. Created by Steel Battalion producer Atsushi Inaba and Devil May Cry director Hideki Kamiya, the game followed a Japanese movie geek who gets sucked into an Ultraman-like film. Once inside, he becomes a superhero himself as he battles numerous baddies in cel-shaded 2D and 3D environments. GameSpot's review has the full rundown on the GameCube's Viewtiful Joe.

A PS2 version would never look nearly as good as the Gamecube version, especially as a port.

That's too bad they'll be taming down the sequel for an E rating. The GC title had a "T" rating, with an optional kid mode.

Hmm, I was under the impression that Joe was rated E.

What the hell does just like its Nintendo cousin mean then?

Good for people who don't have and don't plan to buy a Gamecube.

Kinda lame if the port is censored, but better than nothing I guess.

But what's to censor? I have only played the demo but Joe seems pretty tame relative to other E rated games.

According to the back of the box the "T" rating is justified by "Cartoon Violence" and "Suggestive Themes." Not really sure what they need to get rid of for an "E" rating, but I can see why they would want to get an "E" rating based on the way this game looks to make it more marketable to the 12 and under crowd.

Well that's too bad because I'm certainly going to buy it... at least I won't know what I missed eh?

Somewhat side note: most XBOX ports look exactly the same on the PS2 and Cube, so are they really that far apart that VJ won't look pretty much the same? Isn't VJ all pixels anyway?

NOTE: I have never played the game.

Well that is because most X-Box games are ported to the PS2 and then ported to the GC, thus making the best possible on GC is what the PS2 looks like, hell sometimes worse, I don't think most people know that the GC is much closer to the X-Box then it is to the PS2

Well I know that... from playing Smash Bros I know that... but still, when speaking of ports, Splinter Cell looks pretty much just as bad on Cube as PS2...
