I'm currently 13 levels into it, and it is well worth the cash. I got lucky and had some excess cash over the weekend (first time in ages) and a friend that works at the local gamestore broke street date for me... Was worth every penny, and a bit more. Seems that Daimian has a very high opinion of it too...

I'd be interested, but my laptop's specs won't support it. Plus the $55 tag does seem rather high unless the game takes a while to finish.

Is there a downloadable demo? My specs look close on my computer but I want to be sure before shellingout some money for it if it won't play.

Holy FUCK! This game is scary as HELL!
The way shit just jumps out at you is nuts! I hate having to switch from flashlight to gun... it's already cost me a QuickLoad.
I have an AMD 1900XP, 512MB PC2100 and a Radeon 9700pro. The game auto-detected everything and set it to Medium. Action is choppy when anything else is oncreen. It was really bad in the intro level,
It's gotten better, now that there's less of that. =========== DRIVERS! I've been on my XBox too long! I can't even remember when the last time I updated my drivers! Gah. Oh, I already mentioned this to Brian: turn off MSN Messenger when you play! It doesn't automatically suppress those little pop-ups that come to tell you friends are on, emails recieved, etc. A wicked PITA. I give it a high rating. This is a benchmark game, folks. Every time you upgrade for the next couple years, the first game you'll play is Doom3, and compare the post-upgrade performance to it's pre-upgrade performance. If you have the cash, and a PC that only meets the minimum specs, I would definitely shell out the loot for it. You'll be able to play it and enjoy it, you'll enjoy future upgrades more, and (my big thing, lately) you'll be part of the hubbub! You'll be part of the MetaGamer psyche - and you don't get that 8 months after it's release. Its a judgement call, but this one sounds like a no-brainer. I don't regret my purchase. I also put a pre-order in for Halo 2. I'm still selective about purchasing new titles, but there are some events in which a gamer needs to be active. Halo 2 and Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 each fit that bill.

I just thought that was pretty cool. Usually, you never get a look at your character in action - just in cut scenes. I spent a couple moments throwing punches and otherwise goofing around.
Current game progress:
See?! If you have Doom 3, you can appreciate the spoilers! You can be a part of this ongoing, pertinent discussion and any of the discussions raging across the globe. It's all about the gaming zeitgeist.

I just have the on-board video card for my new PC, so even though it's 64MB I doubt it would run it... In any event, I'm a console gamer, so I'll just wait for the XBOX version.
Doom 3 would be the first PC game I'd play since Diablo 2... ![]() |

My guess is you'll be able to play on medium setting at 640x480. Of coure you can tweak it when you get it and please trust me when I say, it's not a bad thing to play it at 640x480. It's still a beautiful game. Mine skips a bit especially at the beginning of a load but otherwise it plays pretty well. I'm enjoying it. |

I tried playing it today, but I have to wait until it's dark cause it's just not the same. I'm up through the Administration level.
Obviously, the graphics kick ass. I'm running a P4 2.4Ghz with a Nvidia 128MB 4200Ti at 800x600 on "high" quality, and it's smooth for the most part, although I have had some choppiness, but for the most part, it's smooth. However, graphics aside, I couldn't possibly be more disappointed with the enemy AI. Wow, they run right at you. How...uhm...1999. Ok, the soldiers do hide behind things, but all you have to do is retreat around a corner and they'll come running around blindly into your waiting shotgun muzzle. And I also hate the whole "step on a trigger which opens a hidden closet behind you with a monster in it" thing....haven't really seen that since Doom II. C'mon Carmack....you can do better than that, can't you? For every monster busting up out of the stairs or crawling out of the duct work, there's 10 rooms where a hidden closet opens to unleash an imp or zombie. Ugh. I guess the graphics, lighting and general mood make up for the completely crappy AI though. I'm enjoying every second of it, so I shouldn't complain.

All the things you mentioned is what makes this game so great for me. It is a straight up, adrenaline shooter with the finesse of Doom1 & 2, even in multiplayer. No BS, its just twitch and skill. Fantastic, and shows that old skool is still king!

This game was made to be like the original doom series, which was just monsters coming out of places and trying to kill you. Instead of making a new game with good story or something new, they hearkened back to the old days and made a new old game. One of the reasons why I want to play is because I loved the old games so much. I have not been gaming at all lately and I really need a game to bring me back. Is this one of those games that I will just want to play? Or will I get sick of it quickly?

LeChuck,
First you'll be able to get up to at least 800x600 on medium quality, perhaps even 1024x768. My friend has a 9700, and he was doing just fine with those choices. I think you will like the game. Granted I am a big id fanboy. I've been playing their games for a long time - since Commander Keen back in 1988. I feel that Doom is the best videogame ever made. The look, feel, controls, playability, repeat enjoyness, level design, and excitement will probably never be matched by any other game. Doom 3 is a damn good game. If you liked Doom, you will have a smile on your face as you play Doom 3 because there are a lot of things that happen which are straight out of Doom. The graphics and feel of the game are top-notch, as they are for very id game, so I won't bother dwelling on that. What some people dislike about this game is that it doesn't really bring anything new to the table in terms of gameplay. Yes, they added elements to it to make it more Half-Life-y (story, non-player characters to talk to and interact with, scripted events), but in the final analysis, what you're mostly doing is running through the levels, blowing up monsters, and solving puzzles that (for the most part) are like the old Doom "find the key" puzzles, just disguised as something else. Is this a bad thing? For me - no. Because all of this is so well crafted that it's, well, FUN. I honestly want to keep playing and playing just to see what new thing is around the corner. I've been playing for about 8-10 hours now, and the design, enemies, and things I have to do has changed enough to keep it very fresh and exciting. Sometimes it seems that it's just dark corridors to search by flashlight, with zombies popping out, but just when you think that's all there is, BAM, something different happens or your environment changes. Buy the game, turn the lights in your house off, turn the volume up on your surround rig, and enjoy shooting the baddies. It will keep you coming back for more. I mean, hell, even people like sukr, who aren't into the old style gameplay, in the final analysis say they keep coming back to it to play more! If that doesn't prove it's good... ![]() -HM |

Keen's good stuff. Just so old now!
Doom 3 is a good intro back to FPS gaming because it isn't overly sophisticated. A lot of these games have role playing elements to them now, but Doom 3 is just pure action for the most part. Not too much thinking involved - just run and gun for most of it. Damn it for keeping me awake 'til all hours playing... -HM |

In terms of a "mindless killing game", how does it compare to Painkiller? Because I sure love the PK demo.
