We kinda got ambushed into having my son's friend for a sleepover. No biggie - Sam's a great kid. But my wife was NOT ready for that. The baby is sick and she's having a hell of a time dealing with him. Poor babies.
![]() So, I volunteered to take the boys to work with me. "Dad works with a ton of computers, Sam, it's sooo cool." Sam's not into computers, books and other nerdling habits, though. After an hour and a half of playing at HotWheels.com, he's bored. Hey - I found a shareware version of Doom 95! Hmm... I set it up on a couple computers and showed the boys how to play. Deathmatch. Oh, it's on! Two young boys, aged 8 and 9, playing classic Doom deathmatch. [sniff] I'm sorry. There's... there's something in my eye.

I've still got the original Doom games... And I still play them from time to time. Old games are still fun. It's kinda lame how many people will toss out a great game like the older DOS classics, or even "Half-Life" because it's old and doesn't look as good anymore. Just a couple months ago, someone told me he couldn't stand playing HL "because it looks like ass".

HL and Doom do "Look like ass" to be totally honest, but they are games that I can play through to this day because they are so damn fun... Not many games do that, even games I really liked I cant play when I pick it up years later because the gfx are so ugly.
I never did get to play a Doom deathmatch though, Quake was my first DM experience ![]() |

It was Doom 95, for the record, and the first handful of levels are still "out-there" for the taking - freeware, of course.
It wasn't "deathmatch" as we know it, but surely it was some precursor. It was more akin to co-op play with infinite respawns. Wanna finish the level and move onto the next? Work together. Teammate getting on your nerves? Blast him and send him spawning at the very beginning of the map, and force him to get all the keys to unlock the doors.
