Step Aside Doom 3...here comes Unreal 3

In-game renderings of the charactors.

And for a better idea of the engine, download the E3 demo here

The engine is very nice, but the engine isnt all that doom3 was, it was a great game... The last Unreal was kind of a letdown in that regard.

That video is a tech demo for the unreal engine 3 btw, not necessarily unreal 3

I never played Unreal 2. I got out of FPS games for awhile when it came out but with the huge jump in graphics and better story telling I'm getting back into them.

Of course I do know that it's a tech demo but it's still amazing.

Freakin' amazing! I'm still d/ling the video, but those stills look like they'll give id a run for their money. I can't wait to see how the lighting looks!

Some nice Shader Model 3.0 effects on display there, looks like it will support OpenEXR HDR which is cool too. Unreal 3 looks like it will be the first game to fully utilize FP32 precision with its lighting, which I can't wait to see.

But as Syco pointed out, Unreal 2 was kinda "eh." The first Unreal was kinda "eh" too. Not bad, but not spectacular games (aside from graphics) Hopefully this one will break the trend. Also, this game prob won't be out til 2006.

Hopefully by the time its out they'll be some video cards that output 64-bit color. I've been noticing some banding with 32-bit color in some of the more recent graphically intense games & demos.

The first Unreal came out at a time when story in an FPS was much the same as a storyline in a porn movie. It was there...but who really cared?

But now with the newer FPS games we're getting some pretty good stories to go with all that eye candy. I think Unreal will step it up in that area just like the other games have.

Where does it say they are using Shader Model 3.0?

Well it wasn't just a lack of story in Unreal 1, the game just got boring after the missions at the beginning, not very exciting levels.

BTW, here are some pics you might not have seen:
(first few have some info on the game too)

Companies are no longer new at developing compelling storylines or interesting levels. The science of has already been developed. Developers don't have to invent the wheel! They're free to work on making the story/levels - the game - more compelling in other ways. There's a baseline of expectations, nowadays, and I'm sure UT3 will meet them.

Past history of a franchise is just that - past history. Look at Doom3! UT3 could be anything, but I'm betting that the story/level design will be there. Look at that tech demo! All those textures are probably ripped from the game-in-progress, and they're mighty fine! I can't imagine a game taking place in that world and not having a terrific storyline/level design!

Regardless of UT3, imagine what other developers will do with that engine? Plus, now there are two SOTA engines "on the market", so to speak - that induces competition, which lowers the price of both licenses, which means more companies making games. With more companies making games, there's a greater chance of at least one of them being a unbelievable experience! GAMERS WIN!

Very nice looking.

Always liked the original Unreal, although it was tough getting it to run in 3D mode if you didn't have a Voodoo card. I remember fiddling endlessly with the ini files to try both Direct3D and OpenGL modes. Looked great, and I actually had fun playing it.

Are they working on a new single player game? Or are we just going to get more UT type gameplay? I heard Unreal 2 was terrible, although to be fair, Epic didn't create it.

It's Unreal 3, not another Unreal Tournament though I would imagine the engine will be used for a new version of Unreal Tournament as well.

btw, you can get "totally unreal" from gogamer.com for $15, it has the original Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament, runs flawlessly on latest hardware.

'Tis a good deal, but I already own the original games, and I think the current patches work well with them. But it has been a long time since I installed Unreal. It's worth it just for the castle flyby at the beginning.

Wow...if they could make the actual game look like that, I'll be buying a new computer when it comes out for sure. I guess I better start saving now.

That stained glass demo was amazing.
