Anyone playing Doom3 multiplayer yet?
I have been thinking about picking this one up for a while now. I dont really care too much about the level based play, but ever since quakeII died out I have been looking for a good multiplayer game to get into. I like MoH and all but its just not fast enough, and for some reason I just could never get into qIII.
I was wondering if anyone here has given it a try? Are there enough servers out to make it worth while? I doubt its been out long enough to see exactly how good the cheat protection is, but are there any raging flaws? The only thing holding me back from a blind buy right now is the two machines that I might run it on are my laptop, which is P4 3.06 512MB but only 64MB geforce mobile; or a celeron desktop at 2.4 with 512 pc3200 and a 128mb radeon. Im not too optomistic about either. *if this has already been discussed before Im sorry, I did a quick search but didnt find anything.

Doom 3 multiplayer is fun, but nothing extraordinary. I feel Quake III does everything better if you're looking for a deathmatch or 1v1 game. And since Doom 3 has limited maps right now, it gets old a little quick.
What Doom 3 does add to the mix is a) you have to reload your weapons, and b) the ability to shoot out lights, so then you can hide in darkened corners or rooms. The multiplayer isn't bad by any means, it just doesn't do anything that Q3 doesn't do better. -HM |

Your sarcasm overwhelms me.
I also forgot that you can move hazardous barrels around, (if you have time) near doors is a good spot, then blow them up in your opponents face when they come through. But, in my opinion, all these little details don't change the fundamemtal on-line play that much more from Q3, especially in a battle with more than 2 players. If Piglet doesn't like Q3 DM play, it's highly unlikely the small additions to DM play in Doom 3 are going to draw him in. -HM |

Dont get me wrong I dont have anything against q3. It just doesnt hold my attention the way q2 used to. I have a *less than legitimate* copy of doom3 on its way. I cant use the MP without the actual cd, but at least Ill be able to get a feel for how well either of my machines will handle it, if its as cool as I hear Ill prolly grab a legit copy anyway. Im still a little hesitant about the whole 4 person limit, I like the matches with 25 people that yeild 100+ frags in 15 minutes, but we'll see.

If you want that type of game, then Q3 is what you're looking for. Doom 3 isn't designed for a mega-player slugfest.
Although truth be told, the 4 person rule is only a guideline. Many servers allow more. -HM |
