Top 20 Publishers

For the second year running, Electronic Arts (EA) tops the publisher league. EA performed consistently well across all the Top 20 criteria. The publisher boasts the highest revenue, the external development studios ranked them as best to work with and EA's marketing prowess was considered second only to that of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Other highlights from the report include:

* Four publishers now have more than $1 billion in revenue. Take-Two Interactive is the new addition based on the strength of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. EA, Nintendo and Sony continue to grow;

* Microsoft climbed the most spots from last year, ranking No 2 in this year's survey, thanks to increased sales of the Xbox and a strong reputation with developers. Last year Microsoft was No 9;

* EA continued its push towards titles based on licenses with more than 51% of all its releases falling in this category. Vivendi Universal Games, Activision, THQ and Acclaim also invested heavily in licenses and sequels;

* Top 20 newcomer Empire topped the list of original IP games with 64%. Microsoft followed closely with 56%.

Pretty interesting read. You can colour me surprised at MS's second place finish.

Means nothing to me... I am rarely pleased by anything EA puts out, let alone most of it... bah!

seems to me after having a solid way to rank publishers (sales, by us buyers) last year they decided to switch to a system that can't be open and quantified. Reminds me of VH1 top 20 countdown,

then again I just can't believe any ranking system that would put Nintendo at number 10 behind Atari????

The only company I ever truly loved was Delphine. Back in the day they put out some of my favorite titles ever:

Future Wars
Out of this World
Flashback
Fade to Black

Interesting, Microsoft only second to EA now. How far down the list is Nintendo?

BTW here is the link:

Also, not surprised Capcom has dropped out of the top 20. Their releases lately have been sparse, and they have made platform release blunders on most of their recent games - to the point of hurting one of their main franchises, Resident Evil.

As for EngineerJ's comments re: changing the way they rank the publishers... I can so see what you're saying, but this way is interesting too. I'd prefer to see both lists reported. One based on straight-up sales, as well as one based on qualitative and performance factors.

Because as we know, Brittany Spears sells like mad, but she's not the best music artist by far

I just realized I put "developers" instead of "publishers" in the topic line. I tried to update it, but it still says "Top 20 Developers" in the subject listing. It's an important distinction as it puts the list in a different light.

Well when I first got a computer I was a Lucasarts freak anything and everything (except that mortimer kids game) and was a devout EA supporter. Unfortunately both have gone down the tubes (yes Battlefront and the new ea sports title stink). But it seems EA has Ubisoft under contract so I have to shell out to the. Of course sometimes I'm not to bright so I may be getting pubs and devs mixed up.
