The Hype: Software Bandwagons
Meh. The hype around some games is enough to get me to buy them. Overall, I shouldn't be upset because its given me such titles such as Halo, the GTA series, Project Gotham Racing 2 and a couple others.
But. It's also given me a couple games I should have never bought. Syberia. Panzer Dragoon Oorta. Rome: Total War. Battlefield 1942. This isn't a rant, just a ramble. What are the games you bought because of the hype, but didn't turn your crank?

Re: The Hype: Software Bandwagons
Bubsy for the SNES, one of my most hated games of all time.
More recently, KOTOR wasn't as good as it was hyped up to be. The game was fun but the story was bad. Jet Grind Radio and Soul Reaver for Dreamcast. ehh The Resident Evil series until 4. I borowed the first couple and couldn't stand them. Part 4 did live up to the hype though and was very good. Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Beyond Good and Evil were all good but not great. Mario wasn't hyped that much though. I'm sure there's more but that's all I can come up with off the top of my head. However, I did really like Panzer Dragoon: Orta. |

NBA Street V. 3 (2 was better I think)
Return to Castle Wolfenstien - just another shooter. Doom 3 - Don't get me wrong, it was fun but the legacy of the franchise made the hype for this game. No replay value what so ever. Duke Nukem Forever - it hasn't been released yet but just think about it. Theres more I just can't think of 'em right now. To jaked up on waiting for Star Wars at midnight. ![]()

I've said this already, but Enter the Matrix was probably the big one for me. I rarely set down the large chunk of cash on something that I'm not sure of, but that was a definite exception. Oh, and I guess Shadowman (N64) counts. I bought it because of reviews, not necessarily hype, I suppose, and was sorely disappointed. Very unplayable game.

Friggin' Monkey Ball. What the hell is so great about that game? It's like Marble Madness with all the fun sucked out and replaced with cute Japanamated monkeys. Suhk'd.
Oh, and the freakin' Sims. G'lawd A'mighty, that game is tedious. I have no idea what the attraction is to that game.

Re: The Hype: Software Bandwagons
I thought the original Sims game was kind of fun...although that was mostly because we played it at work, and made versions of our co-workers. So it was rather entertaining to force virtual co-workers into homosexual romances, pool-drowning, fire-death, not let them go to the bathroom, and other assorted sillyness.

I'll take that question, S'Munkie...
The complete lack of any killa games. The cube may be underutilized. It may have phenomenal potential. It might have all kinds of good things going for it: But the best game for it - that I played - was either Mario Kart: Double Dash (which wasn't as good as the accursed N64 version) and maybe... nope. I think that's the end of my highlights reel. I love the controller design, and the wavebird was way ahead of it's time. Other than that... yeah. I'm freakin' wicked disappointed.

Enzian, I would recommend you check out either of the Metroid games, of course Wind Waker, and if you've played Smash Bros. then I can't imagine how any person on earth can say the 'Cube is a disappointment. That is simply the single greatest feat of gaming I've ever experienced, and it happens every time I get some friends over and we put it in. It's that good.
I'd imagine that your definition of "killa" games just isn't going to happen on the 'Cube for you, and that's a shame. But there is plenty out there to enjoy, in my opinion.

Wind Waker - [yawn]
Metroid - Meh. Troid. Not my bag of tea. Wind Waker was... okay - but it never grabbed me. I eventually tired of it. Metroid annoyed me. Sure, it was pretty, but the controls were fucktarded. See, I should be able to strafe without enemies, if I want to and without some jacked-up control scheme. Whatever. I'm not here to argue. These are my opinions, and I would appreciate some respect. (Not that there hasn't been - I'm just being proactive )

![]() This is one of the issues I see Nintendo have going forward. Their designers believe they are so brilliant and innovative, that their innovation often gets in the way of playability and gameplay. Innovation is good, but not when it makes games annoying to play for many. A specific example of this could be Metroid Prime, a general one could be the button layout of the Gamecube controller itself.

Yup. Enzian is correct (IMHO).
Mario kart was a better game on the SNES. So was Bomberman. Smash Bros. just doesn't work for me, it's just a random, super fast button smasher. I don't understand what the hype is about.

And a pox on ye blasphemers that degrade the saintly name of Smash Bros. One of those games that on the surface seems ridiculous, but is actually an extremely well put together (albeit utterly silly) beat 'em up. Anyway, this is just turning into me defending Nintendo, "a battle in which I do no think [i] can win." So I digress.
