Xbox XBOX Discs Dying?

I've noticed after about 20+ hours use of any XBOX game I own, holding the disc up to a light reveals odd patterns and marks that look like dust scratches. These marks are not visible without holding the disc to a light.

The marks dont effect play or use at all, but I get quite anal about the condition of something I spent $60 on. Does anyone else notice this happens to their game discs? Can I remove the marks?

Never had a problem, and I've played things like Morrowind, GTA, and Splinter Cell way more than 20 hours.

Nope, I do too. GTA: San Andreas has been sitting in my drive non-stop since the day it was released.

I remember reading that xbox game discs are purposely manufactured with slight ‘imperfections’ to the data layer and that the xbox looks for these ‘imperfections’ during loading the game code as a type of copyright protection. These imperfections are a unique key for each game. I could be wrong, of course, but these things you are seeing may have alwasy been there.

I've never had a problem with any xbox game loading or showing discoloration after extended use, and I’ve logged 50+ hours on some, such as KotOR.

Leaving the disc(s) in the tray should not pose any problems.

If you are seeing concentric circles on the disc, or simple scratches, then the only thing I can think of is maybe you have a speck of debris or dirt in the disc drive, specifically on the slide-out tray or inside the unit. Clean the tray using rubbing alcohol or a damp cloth. If the problem persists you can go nuclear .

If for some reason the scratches start to effect game-play you can always take your disc to a videogame store and have them buff your disc for a few bucks.
