What PC, PS2 or X Box games,do you think have the best sound and why?

What PC, PS2 and / or X Box game (or game/s, if you reckon a few qualify) do you reckon has the best sound compared to other games (as in the best sound mix, best sound design, best sound effects, etc.) when played through any decent speaker system and through any decent, above average home theater system/s and please elaborate on your reason/s why, for each game/s mentioned.

The best use of sound I've experienced are Thief and System Shock 2 (both for PC).

Thief because you HAD to listen out for sounds (footsteps etc) whilst remaining quiet yourself.

System Shock 2 was just one of the most atmospheric games ever created, right from the opening "Look at you hacker..." voice, to the screeching of the monekys in the abandoned corridors. Very creepy!

I haven't really played enough games to unequivocally answer your question, but the surround sound in Rainbow Six 3 and Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow is very impressive. I can't count the times I've been saved, while playing online, from hearing someone come up behind me. Hearing the direction from which gun fire and grenade explosions are coming from is great too. And in levels where there are different floors, you can sometime hear someone walk on the floor above you.

It's very cool stuff.

Doom3 was great for sound. The surround sound was a huge help when things would spawn behind you. They also did a great job of having all those creepy sounds that really sucked me in a freaked me out. Rainbow six is valid also. The gun sounds are great and even though I don't play multiplayer much, the surround sound does let youknow where the AI is firing from.
