I'm in the market for buying an Xbox. I've heard that there were alot of problems with the first generation consoles. How do I tell the difference between 1st generation and 2nd generation consoles ? My friend tells me that Microsoft has fixed all the related problems that plagued the 1st gen system. Can I see the difference (ex: serial #'s, something on the side ?). I just don't want to mistakenly purchase a 1st generation console....I want to be informed because quite frankly, I don't trust store merchants. My friend says the difference is mainly the cd drive. How can I tell ? If someone out there could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Any new system you buy at a store is no longer first gen. Those sold through long ago. Now, used is another story...

Not to sound rude Elwood, but you state the obvious. It's common sense that a new console would be 2nd generation. I posted a question asking what the differences are when purchasing a used system. Why would I invest over 200 bucks for a new console when the the 360 is around the corner ? The reason I'm interested in a used console is because they sell for about 125 dollars.

There's your guide to finding out which Xbox version you may have. Also, a new Xbox can be purchased for $150, which may be worth the extra $25 investment. Anyways, like Elwood, I did not gather that you meant "used" systems in your first post as the word "used" is nowhere to be found. Thank you for the clarification.

As far as the dvd drive is concerned... I don't know how they decide what 3 they use goes into what console. I think the x boxs are up to version 1.7 now. And no there is no way to tell what version you are getting until you get it home and get at the serial number. For mor of that info check out Xbox Scene

Many thanks Brian. I now know what to look for when purchasing a used Xbox. I would like to apologize to Elwood. Looking back at my thread, I didn't realize that I had forgotten to mention that I was looking to buy a used system. Anyway, you mention that I can get a new console for around $150 bucks. Remember that in the USA things are much cheaper than here in Toronto. A new Xbox (which comes as a bundle) is selling for $230 dollars. I wish I could find a new one for $150 !!! I'd scoop it up in a second ! Anyway, I guess I'll have to settle for a used system (which will set me back around $140 plus taxes.)
I just wanted to thank you for your reply. (and to Elwood...I'm sorry. I was the one who goofed up.) |
