Anyone buy it yet? I'm on my way to Best Buy this evening to pick it up.

I might give this demo a try. Is it strictly a military battle type game, or is there more to the story/situation, like FEAR?

It's actually much more of a sci-fi story... the first half of the game is more military and the second is more aliens, pretty much like Far Cry and the mutant things.
It's the best looking game ever made, and it's a very good FPS as well. People who were dissapointed thought it was going to be the second coming of Jesus (or the next Half Life) and it wasn't. |

Just downloaded the demo.
What settings are you guys playing Crysis at? Because I eventually had to turn the resolution all the way down, AA off, and everything in ADVANCED set to low for me to have any control at all. And of course, by that point it looked like crap. Something just seems off, since I have a quad core system and a 8800GTS. When I had the game scan my system and autodetect the settings, it picked high. But the game crawls at that setting. I know this game is the most hardware intensive out there, but I refuse to believe I'd have to play it at 800X600. For comparison, I run Bioshock at 1920X1200 with everything turned all the way up and it runs great. Miggy, the Thief

F.E.A.R. was unique because of its amazing AI and squad enemies... Crysis is unique because of the massive open levels like FarCry and it's amazing photo-realism... In the end, yes, you shoot people from a first-person perspective... but that's the genre, what did you expect?

Maybe there's something wrong with the demo. I'll look for a patch, but if I can't get it to run any better than what it's doing now, no way am I buying this game.
I wasn't real clear before, but even on the lowest possible settings for everything (800X600), it still doesn't run smooth. Miggy, the Thief

I never played the demo, but I can tell you with an 8800 that's nowhere near normal. If the game itself runs that poorly on your system it's something on your end, not the game itself, which for how good it looks is surprisingly well optimized.

If it's something on my end, then it's something that's only affected this demo. I looked for a patch and didn't find any.
Oh well, no loss except for a bit of time. Miggy, the Thief

Well considering your performance is nowhere near the norm for that setup, there's obviously some conflict or another. Don't take that as offensive in some way, this is PC gaming, as I'm sure you know.
Crysis is probably one of the best games ever made, certainly one of the best FPSes... don't just give up on it because of something that is fixable. Check out the tweak guide at www.tweakguides.com and see if it offers any other answers, or post in a real gaming forum and see if anyone has good suggestions. |

For me, it's the multiplayer that has the longevity in the game. I liked the game, but when:
I felt like they were rehashing the same storyline that every other FPS used. They've got to improve the MP if it's going to become a more played game online though. The weapons, audio, and the unique "nano suit" really made this a blast to play. First time I whipped a chicken at someone, I laughed for about 10 minutes.

FarCry became kinda lame halfway through as well, that seems to be a CryTek staple... doesn't stop the first half from being one of the best, most epic FPS games I have ever played though. That harbor level with the AA guns and battleship was just amazing...

I know what you're saying, Mooogle. No offense taken.
I might look into it after I finish with Bioshock (have to finisht this first go-round, then play through it again). Miggy, the Thief

Moogle -
I absolutely agree. There are just some utterly fantastic things in the game in the beginning. I don't understand why some FPSes seem to think we need mutants to have a sci-fi military game. In all honesty, CoD4 really succeeded in that area. Although there are parts of Crysis that simply top CoD4, CoD4's realistic situations and scenarios made it a more complete game with several unique (and fun) levels.

I finished the first go-round of Bioshock, so I loaded up the demo to Crysis again. I'm happy to report that it ran smoothly this time. I was able to up it to max resolution and everything on High. Maybe that first night I tried it the computer was running a complete virus scan or something.
I wouldn't mind the game running just a tad smoother, so I'm going to look up some information about overclocking. I've heard the Q6600 can overclock easily. EDIT to be more on-topic: I think I will be buying this game, even though I'm not usually into war/battle outdoor level-type games where you're getting shot at from everywhere. The one thing that I like much better than FarCry is the Halo-style recharging armor/suit instead of the rare health packs scattered around in FarCry. I hope it stays this way throughout the whole game. Miggy, the Thief

I think it's smarter than "Doom-esque" style gameplay. There is a lot more variation in how you approach the various levels and I really enjoyed that. Being able to dynamically change how you play is really innovative. I loved moving from cloak, to maximum strength, armor, etc. The best part is that you're not forced to adopt one type of gameplay. It's really up to you how you want to do it.

I have a quad core system with a lowly Radeon 2900, and the game runs nicely with everything on very high. I run a Windows XP system, but I downloaded a patch that makes the high setting very high, and the game is just gorgeus!
I also agree with others, the game is great until you start fighting aliens in a zero gravity environment. So many 1st person shooters do that, like the 1st Half Life, and the dissapointing treck through Zen. Killing humans(or zombies) just can't be beat. ![]()

I think killing aliens works at times... Halo certainly accomplished a satisfying combat atmosphere without ever using humans, and I guess that's because the tactics and strategy of a human opponent was still there.
Too often alien games just have them running toward you with ghastly looks on their faces, which is usually boring. I've never been one for the original Doom/Painkiller/Serious Sam kind of game where it's just mindless shooting... I can enjoy that kind of game on occassion if there are other factors that make the game compelling, like Doom 3's graphics or Prey's portals... but for the most part I want a more tactical experience, which is usually limited to human opposition. Side note: this idea that Crysis is "pretty but boring" or "lacking innovation" is cropping up all over message boards, mostly as a way of console gamers or people with crappy PCs pretending they don't want the game. Crysis is anything but boring as any Youtube search could show you, and while not the most innovative game ever it combines sublte innovations and polished classics into a great experience, at least for the first half. Crysis rocks. |

Well, if I liked Prey and Doom / Doom3, will I like the second half of Crysis?
I don't mind some mindless shooting. Miggy, the Thief

You'll like the second half better than those games. I did. It's just very mindless killing and it loses the open feel the first part of the game has. Plus, it's a hard turn from the way the story had been going.
