First-ever console antivirus software launched.

Probably not a bad idea considering the PS3 has an open-ended web browser builtin and hence may be vulnerable to things like script attacks from malicious internet sites and whatnot. From a reputable company too, so odds are its decent. IIRC the PS3 browser has already been patched once for security vulnerability, so its not a far-fetched idea.

Yeah... on a gut level I feel the same way. But on the other hand it's good that this kind of work is being done since all three of the current consoles have HDD and internet connectivity, a combination which seems like it would tempt virus makers.

You take the good with the bad I guess.

My guess based on its description is that this program's primary function will be to block bad websites. This isn't entirely the most effective AV method because generally in order for the AV company to be notified that a website is bad several end users need to be infected first; then once the AV engine is update, the virus writer can simply upload a clone of his virus to a different website address and the user is vulnerable to the same virus again. On the other hand, I'm not sure you could do much else with game consoles because having a memory resident active AV engine might cause havoc with games not expecting it to be there - and the AV engine might not have access to be able to block executables or script from being run.
