Your Top 5 Games of 2007
So with Mass Effect and Rock Band released there really isn't much left for the year. Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3 is the only thing left for me and I know that won't be a GotY candidate. So... I figured it was time for this. If there is some game still coming you think you'll love, feel free to wait and post then.
Here's mine, in worst to best order: 5. Mass Effect - Truly epic story and one of the best end-runs ever overcomes technical flaws and mundane sidequests I almost advise you skip. Also: best videogame soundtrack ever, let alone this year. 4. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - The most "in a movie" experience ever, and one hell of a smart and fun shooter as well. A non-stop romp of excitement. Best graphics of the year. 3. BioShock - It was hard putting BioShock anywhere but number one, it's a pinnacle of art and design in games and has one of the best twists in gaming history that really attempts to not only explain why we do what we do in games, but also how far we can push the medium. 2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - There isn't much to say about CoD4 other than it puts you into realistic war and espionage settings more than any other game has ever done, and more than I thought possible this generation. A triumph for realism in games and general excitement. 1. Portal - I was worried about giving the top slot to a 3 hour game that's mostly classic gaming fun. It almost goes against everything I said above, but the simple fact is there was no game I had more fun with this year than Portal. The story was actually a highlight, despite it being somewhat absent through most of the game. Voice acting, presentation and design are the best of the year and in the end you'll just have a grin from ear to ear because of the experience you just had. "This was a triumph" indeed. I can't fill this out, as there are still too many games from this year that I haven't even played yet. Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank Future, CoD4, and Assassin's Creed all still await me. If I had to choose my Game Of The Year right now (a gun to my head, natch), then I'd have to say Bioshock. Mass Effect is awesome, but I haven't played enough of it to really know how I really feel about it. Portal was good too, but I cannot give a GotY title to a game that short. I just can't. I also loved Heavenly Sword, so that one would certainly be in my Top 5. Still, I have far too many games to play to say for sure which has been my favorite.

Well There are going to be alot of repeats here me thinks. I have not yet played the Orange Box yet or picked up Mass Effect (soon very very soon) so take that into consideration when noting the exclusions.
1. Bioshock - The perfect mixture of visuals, sound, story, and 2 differt game genres makes for a game everyone should have played by now. 2. Rock Band - Playing it by yourself is fun but when you get a full blown 4 piece "band" together is amazing. The set list is outstanding. Tell me you are hooked when Pete Townshend finishes one of his solos and you get to scream "yeeeeeahhhhhhh!!!!!" and the drums kick in, heaven baby. No you ain't CSI. 3. Call of Duty 4 - Don't let the shortness of the single player fool you. The multiplayer game adds depth and lets you modify your player with "perks". This is definitely not anything like the previous installments. More intense firefights and outs standing audio/video presentation. 4. NHL 08 - The last time I played and NHL game it was bland the controls where funky and the player movements where making me wanna head for the door. The AI learns your tendencies and forces you to expand the way you play the game. Like the hit stick in madden NHL has the skill stick and when you learn how to use it it's amazing. MtCarmel having my Red Wings dominate your Canucks has never been so much fun. 5. Halo 3 - Now this is where I had issues. Guitar Hero 3 or wait till I try out the 3 games I want. Well it's Halo and for all it's hype it was a definate improvement over 2. The gameplay was ..... well.... Halo the visuals and character design have all been revamped. Its a great ending to a great series.

Like Reaver, there's too many AAA releases that I'm waiting for a price drop on for me to give a proper top 5 list... but here's my list based on what I have played:
1. Orange Box: Portal (Xbox 360) 2. Call of Duty 4 (Xbox 360) 3. Mass Effect (Xbox 360) 4. Puzzle Quest (DS) 5. Forza 2 (Xbox 360) Games yet to be played which I think may have a shot at the top 5: Ace Combat 6 (Xbox 360) Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360) Bioshock (Xbox 360) Kane & Lynch (Xbox 360) Resident Evil 4 (Wii) Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) KM

I’ve not played many games this year and I just got my 360, so I’m really far behind the rest of you. Anyway, here’s my work-in-progress list.
1. God of War II (PS2) 2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (360) 3. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) 4. Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS) 5. Crackdown (360)

With the rest I'll wait until they hit the $20-$30 range. The content doesn't change, and I've got online games to keep me busy, so I don't feel I'm losing anything by playing the waiting game. Yeah, I said "playing the waiting game." I'm hilarious. KM

Well I've pretty much played everything too Moogle so I'm with ya.
1. Bioshock: I love the mood of this game. It really draws you in. 2. Call of Duty 4 This game came out of nowhere for me and really surprised me. The single player is great and then you get into the highly addictive multiplayer. 3.The Orange Box This is more specifically for Portal but the whole package is a great deal for everyone. 4.Rock Band After playing this with 3 of my friends yesterday it is by far the best party game I have ever played. It has lived up to all my expectations. 5.God of War II This game was utterly amazing. The story, gameplay, everything you expect from a big sequel (that was aimed at you Halo 3). My biggest disappointment this year was Halo 3. The story wasn't that great and the multiplayer I didn't care for that much (even though I played the crap out of it). The multiplayer especially compared to COD 4 is just very empty and lacking depth. The only games I had to wait on playing are Assasins Creed and Uncharted just because of the money situation.

Re: Halo 3
I'm not the greatest Halo fan to begin with, so I pretty much got what I expected with the latest one, but where it really shone, and one of the main reasons it's in my Top 5, is the whole replay functionality. That is simply an amazing achievement, and it elevates Halo 3 above most of the competition. If it hadn't been for the flood level H3 would've been higher on my list. KM

1. Bioshock - Not much to say about this game that hasn't already been said. Incredible story, art, music, gameplay, etc. It just all comes together here. Ebert said games aren't art, this one proves him wrong. Singleplayer is what has always drawn me to games, so a lack of multiplayer doesn't bother me at all, like it does a few.
2. Mass Effect - For me, the good far outweighs the bad on this title. Yes, there are frame rate issues, yes there are glitches, yes the team AI is practically non existent, but the story, RPG elements and even much of the combat, when it's working well, creates one of the most compelling gaming experiences I've had in a long time. I've been waiting for a great sci-fi RPG, and I got it. 3. Call of Duty 4 - The single player is great, short, but great. What I've come to expect from the guys at Infinity Ward. There are a number of jaw dropping moments throughout it. Graphics, sound, etc. all stellar. What really takes this one to the next level is the multiplayer...very deep, and engrossing. I love the perk and xp system, it keeps me coming back for more and more...I'd maybe like a little slower paced MP, as it's very fast, something a little more tactical, but it's a minor quibble. 4. Assassin's Creed - I know a lot of people were disappointed this game. Not sure if those people maybe got too wound up in the hype or what, but I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Yes, there could have been a little more variety in the quests, at the very least different dialog for the people you saved, but in the end the quests were simply an excuse or vehicle to get me doing what I wanted to, which is free-running, climbing, fighting, etc. These aspects, along with the story, kept me very entertained. Can't wait to see what happens in the sequel. 5. Halo 3 - I actually debated this one quite a bit. I was never really on board the Halo train like a lot of people. Never played through the first one, only ever played a little co-op and a little multiplayer on the second. I knew they were good games, but coming from a PC gamer background, there was nothing really revolutionary about it as a FPS. I definately boned up on the story before 3, and I definitely enjoyed the experience, especially co-op which is probably my all-time favorite feature in games, but it was still nothing revolutionary as an FPS. Good story, good graphics, gameplay. While the lack of quality maps hurts the online experience somewhat, I feel, like Astrakan, that the replay feature is a amazing achievement, and it keeps me coming back, if for no other reason than to fly around during a match and check out the cool stuff I did and get screenshots etc. From now on, every multiplayer game that doesn't have this feature will feel like it's lacking. |

5. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
4. Halo 3 3. Bioshock 2. God Of War II 1. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune I would have also liked to stick Ratchet & Clank in there because it is a very solid game. Uncharted certainly isn't perfect, it is short for one, but the overall experience just left me so satisfied, and the story is top notch. Halo 3 only made the list because it was just damn fun to play off-line co-op, really had a blast going through it with a friend.

5. Super Mario Galaxy.
This game brought back memories from the N64 Super Mario 64. This game is very fun and is somewhat new. Going upside down gave me some motion sickness but got used to it after awhile. 4. Mass Effect The graphics didn't blow me out like how I thought it would, but this game is a must buy for RPG fans because it comes with the full package with a great storyline. This game will have replay value for a single player game. 3. Rock band This is a great party game or a game to play yourself because on the online capabilities. This is very fun and addicting. This is something new instead of the same guitar. You can rock out hard and dont wake your neighbor's. 2 Call of Duty 4. This game is highly addicting. The online multiplayer is very fun and intense. IMO this game blew Halo 3 out of the water. Halo felt to me like a half assed Halo and this game will be played for a long time. 1. Portal. What can I say? This game is awesome. It is really short, but worth the 60 bucks alone. Note: I didn't include Bioshock because I felt the game was OK. It wasn a good game but wasn't great and in my opinion I thought that game was overrated. |

I dunno, it's many factors in one I'm sure. I love stories in games, I don't really like the play, stop, play, stop nature of it, most people online are assholes and even if you play with friends you have to tolerate them, I barely have time to finish the SP portions of my games, let alone play all the MP stuff as well.
When my friends want to play something the fun of getting together outweighs all that, but online... |
