Unreal Tournament 3

So I got this a few days ago for the PS3, but this thread is for the PC version as well. Anyone playing?

I haven't played UT since the original, which I loved at the time. Despite my lack of multiplayer love I have always really enjoyed UT, and this one is no different. I have been playing it most of the day, switching from multi to compaign and back...

First off, amazing graphics. Not Uncharted standards maybe, but they match Gears of War for sure, so congrats epic for proving the U3 engine works great on the PS3. The game also runs extremely smooth, maybe not 60fps constantly, but very fast.

The new mode is Warfare, which is basically assault combined with king of the hill. I LOVE it, personally, and have a hard time playing much else! The strategy involved in holding 4 positions as well as attacking the main reactor is a thrill for sure...

I can't wait to see what modders do with the game... no map packs! Haha... I suggest a purchase for all multiplayer FPS fans with a PS3...

Also, friend me if you play: StingingVelvet is my PSN tag.

Are you rocking the controller or using a mouse and keyboard setup?

At the moment a controller, though I am happy to have the ability to switch. The controls on the PS3 pad work perfectly though, one of the smoothest dual analog setups outside of Halo, so... I'm more than satisfied.

I had this in my hands yesterday but ended up putting it back. I like playing FPS's but I'm just not that good at them, at least I feel like I'm not good enough to get a lot of enjoyment out of multi-player FPSing. I get the feeling like I'd be the one constantly dying and all my teammates are complaining about it. Maybe after some more practice with single-player I'll feel confident enough to jump to multi-player, but at this point... not so much. I do kind of want to get it though.

I feel the same way sometimes, and the great thing about UT is that dying is really no big deal, especially in CTF and Warfare modes. You come back instantly... it's more about strategy and knowing where to attack and when.

I really suggest you grab it at some point, I will play with you, I don't care how crappy you are...

Here's what I've collected about it: (haven't played it yet)

* It's more like UT than UT2003/4 was.
This is a good thing.

* They slowed down the gameplay to make it more palatable to play on a PS3 (apparently due to PS3's controller limitations).
This is not a good thing.

The game moves very, very fast for a console FPS... Is it slower than the PC version? Probably... but will you notice it? I doubt it.

Yeah the only way I'll ever buy another UT game is if I hear alot more comment like that. The first was the best.

Personally I hope for the 360 version that they do not allow people to play with PC users and further do not allow use of mouse/keyboard on the 360. Or, give some penalty to swinging around fast with the mouse as we saw in Shadowrun.

If I wanted to play with computer controls, I'd buy the game for PC. And if you use a controller vs. a person with m/k setup, you are at a huge disadvantage and I wouldn't want that either.

They do not allow PC and PS3 cross-platform play... They do allow KB&M but in online play you choose one or the other to eliminate any advantages.

And the 360 version will 99% likely not have user-made content, so... it sucks. Haha.

That wouldn't be too bad, although it might cause a problem for "quick match" for one of the involved parties.

Only if Epic refuses to play by Microsoft's rules. After all, FarCry Instincts had user-made online content and it came out ages ago. Also, I'd much rather have a wide userbase of online players than access to amateur maps.

The fact you would even compare Farcry's little level editor thing is laughable to me.

my point was that (apparently) they slowed down the PC experience so that the whiny console players could keep their handicapped controllers, instead of just programming it for the proper, native platform : PC.

This is a perfect example of how the success of console gaming HURTS PC gaming, the undebatable superior platform for some types of games.

Reaper, I think you have it backwards. They slowed down the PS3 version from the PC version so it could be played with a controller. The PC version is still fast.

Here is a quote from the IGN review for the PC:

"At its core, Unreal Tournament 3 offers exactly what its predecessors (specifically UT '99 and '04) did to make it so popular: preposterous action at blindingly fast speeds."

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Exactly, they slowed down the PS3 version, but it didn't effect the PC version at all.

As for PC being the superior platform for certain kinds of games, I agree... RTS is best on PC.

FPS? Not so much anymore. I'm sorry but ever since Halo on the Xbox I have been perfectly happy with console FPS... dual analog for the win.

Anyway... that's neither here nor there. UT3 was not effected by the PS3 port.

I just picked up this game and its better than I thought. Was huge UT fan back in the day and was excited about this release. Lot of people saying it doesn't live up to the hype...BUT THEY'RE WRONG!!! The graphics aren't groundbreaking but they are beautiful and I cant see anything wrong with them. Weapons look and perform great. Action is smooth as silk. Only got a little lag after like 2 hours of playing after new people logged on to the map, but 95% of the time it was lag free and I played on 10 and 16 player maps.

One thing about this game is that like HALO it takes skill to be good. You gotta know the maps, know when/where to use certain weapons, and also, how to dodge attacks. The gameplay is fast and fierce and most importantly...FUN! I always loved Capture the Flag, my favorite mode. Im not great, usually ended up somewhere in the middle in kills/points. Will get better when I learn the maps, only had the game 1 day so far.

PSN account is Wurms if anyone is brave enough

I think the people crying foul on UT3 are mostly those who slavishly devoted themselves to 2K4 and can't handle change.
