Playstation download store... anyone!
Has anyone signed up and used the Playstation download store yet? I registered and used it a few times. First of all, let me say that registration sucks. I have had a perfectly good credit card refused over and over. I have not been alone in this problem. I ended up using a friend's card instead.
There are lots of game trailers to download and other goodies like themes for your PSP. You can buy PS-1 games, PSP games (I didn't look for any PS3 games, since I don't own one.) It's hard for me to buy downloaded games when I love to have a physical copy of a game. With the PSP, there is the appeal of getting faster loading and run times with the game reading from memory stick instead of UMD. Still, even though the games cost less, you can find the game used on UMD for less than what Sony is asking. The one thing about the store that appeals to me the most is the ability to buy exclusive (download only) titles. That brings us to this fun little game called BEATS. It's only $4.99, so you can take a chance on this one without feeling burned. BEATS is a music game like most where you press buttons in time to the music; but for the small price, it offers so much more... Beats™ is a new and exciting way to interact with your music collection on your PSP®(PlayStation®Portable) system. It breathes life in to your music, by using a beat tracking technology to create gameplay from any song the player supplies. Choose from Challenge or Jamming modes, and experience a new way to enjoy your music on the go. Key Features: • Personalized Gameplay - Beat tracking technology creates unique gameplay from any song • Robust Customization - Animated backgrounds, interactive visuals and downloadable extras give the player full control • Online Community - Save your jamming sessions and interact in challenge mode, playback or share online with the Beats community • Multiplayer Gameplay - Play cooperatively or competitively with 1-4 players via Ad Hoc Yes, you can use your own mp3s!!! I encourage anyone with a PSP to give this games a try. It's a great little time killer that may kill more time than you intended. It's perfect for todays -life on the go/need a quick minigame-fix. I just realized I sound like a commercial for Sony. I'm sorry. I just thought I'd tell you guys about something that's got me buzzing lately. If anything, you don't have too much to lose at this price. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/28614.html

I've signed up for the Playstation Store, and fortunately not (yet) run into any of the problems with credit cards that you have.
I've downloaded a few things for both the PSP and the PS3, including Beats. I agree, I prefer having a physical copy too, but when the prices aren't too high I don't usually have an issue. |

I love the PSN store... Everyday Shooter, Super Stardust, flOw and Pain are probably the best downloadable games on the next-gen consoles... The 360 may have a lot more titles, but not a lot of ones that compete in awesomeness with those...
I also like the PS1 games, they play great and look decent upconverted... I wish they would release more of them. The only ones I have now are Castlevania and Crash Bandicoot. I also love the PSN store because you can use exact money and real cash amounts, unlike the Wii and 360 stores which fuck around with points. All in all the PSN store gets an A+ from me. |

Hey Moogle, do I have to have a PS3 to download PS1 games for use on my PSP? I don't own a PS3, but from my reading, it seems like I have to download them to the PS3 first and then to the PSP.

You didn't ask me, but I'll answer anyway. For a while you needed the PS3 to get games onto your PSP, but not anymore since the Playstation Store website opened.
http://store.playstation.com/store/index.vm You'll need to download the Playstation Network Downloader, about 2.6 MB, and then hook your PSP up through USB and you can get it to the PSP. Hope that helps! |

Ok, what PS1 game should I buy for the PSP, anyone? I already have the original Wipeout on PS1 disc... maybe Warhawk? I will be happy when they get a large number of titles out; something like Einhander, I would buy right away.

Does the 360 let you do what you describe?

The 360 allows you to play your arcade games on an unlimited amount of machines instead of just 5 maximum. The trick is you need to be signed in to XBOX Live. With the PS3 solution, if you have a few breakdowns or upgrade to PS4, PS5, etc, eventually your downloads will no longer work. I don't like the idea of paying for something that I eventually will no longer be able to download; I want to be able to re-download/play whatever I buy an unlimited amount of times and on an unlimited amount of machines. If I had a limit (like 5 times), I definitely would not buy the game in the first place. This is the same DRM solution that is used on Microsoft's Zune Marketplace and MTV's URGE, and as a result I have bought less than 5 songs on either; through a few computer upgrades and breakages I have nearly blew threw all my 5 re-downloads in less than a year. Don't get me wrong, Apple's is bad too as you can only download the songs one time (though you can swap them around an unlimited amount of machines, 5 at once). Amazon has the best solution - redownload the song as many times as you want as long as it is available... MP3 format too so NO drm! ![]() Now, the 360 solution would be a great solution if the DRM actually worked properly with all the games. The problem with MS's solution is that a few of the developers have failed to implement it properly - examples are games which revert to trial if your net connection goes out and lose your session progress, games that erase your saved game when they revert to trial, and games that have game-stopping glitches when they revert to trial in the middle of a session. Now, while there are only a handful of games that have these issues, all of the games should work perfectly in this respect. The problem lies both with the devs and Microsoft, moreso Microsoft as it is their DRM, their download service, and their QA team which failed to catch these bugs. Another problems with the 360 solution is that on a 2nd machine profiles are rendered useless. If you use the Live signin method, only the person with the Live account can play the full game and get achievements, etc. This is a result of poor design of the profile system and DRM interaction; they were probably designed by two different teams. There is no reason why the Live account can't be signed-in in the background while the other profile is playing. Personally, I would also like more control in dictating which console is the offline "home base" similar to how we see with Apple iTunes. Maybe something you can change once every 6mos. Anyway, Microsoft is apparently working on these issues (I and many others have done plenty of complaining) and hopefully they will work out some of the issues. If some of my above suggestions can be fixed, I feel the 360 DRM solution would be more than satisfactory and far superior to a limited re-download solution. Microsoft now has a license-transfer program with customer support so you can switch all your games to another machine if you wish, though it would be better if you could do this process yourself.

In defense of Sony's sytem, a PS3 is not a computer... how long would it take to install a game to 5 different console machines? A long time, one would imagine. Even if you still want to play flOw on your PS8 there isn't even a good chance you could still download it.
Which by the way is something else to worry about with these stores and arcade titles... how do we know these will still be downloadable, or even functional, on the next systems? Or the ones after that? |

So the PS3/360 don't let you save games you have downloaded to another hard drive? I saved what I go from the Playstation store for my PSP onto my hard drive, so the availability of future downloads won't matter for me.

You can save 360 games to as many 360 HDDs as you want, but the games only work if you're signed into your profile and online.
PS3 I am pretty sure you can save to anything but for every actual PS3 or PSP you put them on it counts as an "install" and you only get 5 of those. Either way, the concern is of course that the games will not be playable on the PS4... I would hate to keep my PS3 just to play Everyday Shooter. |
