Console games look like crap on a big TV
So, seriously... I upgraded from a 30 inch HDTV to a 42 inch and now all my console games look like total ass. Way too many jaggies, obvious low resolution (even full 720p is low compared to PC, and many games aren't even that) and even the seams between polygons show up more...
Suddenly I feel like amazing looking console titles, Call of Duty 4 or BioShock, look like crap. Really got me thinking of going full into PC gaming again... Anyone with similar thoughts? |

Well, the problem is that the size is so big. Even if you blew up a PC game running at 1600x1200 to 50" it would look shitty without some serious AA/AF.
Fact is, most next-gen games use 1280x720 graphics. Often with no AA or 2xAA, which is not enough; at that size you'd need 4xAA and 8xAF for it to look really nice. MS and Sony saved some money by using 128-bit graphics memory bus, and as a result you see these shitty results in terms of lack of AA/AF. MS tried to alleviate some of the problem with eDram, but even with that there is not enough eDram to fit a single 1280x720 frame - so now you are talking about 1024x600 with 2x AA and 4xAF vs. 1280x720 with no AA/AF... Not sure which is better. So its a tradeoff, I'd just get used to some of the jaggies. Also make sure your sharpness is not amped up. In the end, IMO it is more fun playing on a big screen with some jaggies than a screen that is 1/3 the size (for me at least).

Well I can hook my PC up to my large TV and run games in full 1080 res with AA and AF... Some of the newest games like Crysis I can't until I upgrade, but most everything from now and back can be maxed with my 8800GT.
Anyway, I know WHY... I just wonder how people live with it. Call of Duty 4 looks soooo low res now, it's crazy. I feel like going back to my old TV for gaming and using this one solely for movies. |

Well you will always see the loose ends of the graphics on a bigger screen but i will not go back to a 25" tv after moving up to a 50" HDTV. I have played a few games at my theater on the big screen using a Cristie LW25/LW40 1080i LCD Digital Projector. Now there is where you will see the big problems. (we even tried GoldenEye on it) Still am i really going to complain about graphics all the much to play a few hours on a movie theater screen? No. I'll take what i can get and enjoy it while i can. Plus i hate PC gaming and have always been a console and controller guy

I guess my main point is, now that I have a larger screen, my need for awesome resolutions and AA/AF is coming back. I didn't miss it until now... |

Hmm... I guess it depends on what you're used to. I went from a 27" regular TV to a 42" widescreen HDTV in 2002, which is the TV I still have right now, so I've never seen the current or last gen consoles on anything but that TV. Well, sure, I've seen them in stores and stuff, but you know what I mean.
Point is, I have absolutely no complaints on the graphics. Maybe had I started with a 30" I would have the same concerns as you. I'm kinda glad I didn't. I like liking what I have. ![]() KM

I went from a 61 to a 46 & than back to a 62 before finally sitting on a 60.
Indeed games on the 46" set looked sharper than the 60"s but that is just because your eyes can't focus on every single detail 10+ feet away. Actually the biggest jump I noticed was going from a 60 720p set to a 60 1080p set. Woa the colors man..

I usually play on my 92" projection setup (720p). When I go to my smaller 46" set downstairs, things are noticably harder to see (like other players in RB6 vegas).
Whenever you blow anything up the image will be softer, but my experience is that you see more details (good and bad) at higher resolutions. It's true that with a PC you can run higher quality video... of course, I didn't pay 300 bucks for my PC either ![]()

I'm gonna have to try playing a game outside this year on the "wall".
220" inches. 16x9 I'd imagine somewhere along the line the sheer size of it will make the fun factor beat the detail factor ten fold. ![]() |

I mostly play driving games so, I'm not seeing the issues most of you are talking about. PGR 3, PGR 4, and NFS:MW look GREAT on my 65" Dlp. As soon as I get another copy of FSX Ultra, I will load it up on my HTPC, to see how it looks on my Mits. I love my flight simulators, so I am hoping I won't be too disapointed...
