Is this RROD on older Xbox models or with the newer ones with the falcon chipsets?

I picked up the Xbox Elite and outside of playing GTA IV, the only other game I intended to get was that of Call Of Duty. Now Im not so sure I want to if its gonna fuck up my machine.

You don't need a receipt. Just call them up. RROD is now covered for 3 years so you can't be out of warranty on this.

No receipt needed. Just call 1-800-4MY-XBOX and you'll have a new 360 within a few weeks.

Towel trick? Why not just get a new one? It's free. And nearly hassle free.

LOL

Love the Dave and Pumpkin pics!

I'm buying the Elite (because Ninja Gaiden II) this weekend, there's NO NEED to buy Best Buy's PSP Warranty right?

I should also look for the latest Lot #? I think they have 0809.

Youtube.... the one thing that gives the people to lazy to call 18004myxbox the smallest glimmer of hope. Pick up yout xbox and shake it a little. Hear that little something on the inside shaking aroud?? Thats a video chip. Its popped out and a wet towel isn't going to fix it.

Just stop wasting time trying these "fixes" and get your box to send the bricked box in and get on with playing.

Just for reference, every 360 you shake makes a noise and it is not the video chip. There is a sensor inside that determines which direction the console is standing so the ring of light can display the controllers connected in proper fashion, and it makes noise when it moves.

Also, for the older XBOXes where the video chip detaches, it generally does not fully detach and generally never bounces around the XBOX. The towel trick works for some because as stated above the video chip is generally not fully detached and overheating the console with a towel can partially reflow the solder, resulting in a temporary fix.

But as others stated, its easy to get the console repaired. Call the number, tell them you've tried everything and it still RRODs, then they will send you a box with free return shipping - plus the repair is free. Takes around 2-4 weeks from the time you first call to getting your console back depending how far you live from the repair center.

You should also request a license transfer, because they won't do it unless you tell them, and you could get royally screwed when Live goes down.

And don't even think about upgrading to an Elite, they reject license transfers for voluntary upgrades.

BTW - Microsoft says the license transfer process takes 20-30 days

License transfer is only necessary if the console is replaced. They recently have been repairing people's units over at XBOX service which does not require license transfer.

If you do receive a replacement unit from XBOX service they are supposed to automatically put you on the license transfer queue which takes 30-60 days to be completed. Sometimes this does not happen, however, and you have to request a license transfer from XBOX support.

Finally, like you stated they reject license transfers for upgrades unless you can provide paperwork showing that the upgrade was the result of an exchange due to your first console being defective. If your first console is still "in the wild," they will not do license transfers.

On the other hand, if you are always connected to the internet like most are with broadband, it does not matter too much as you always will have access to your content when logged in with your Live Silver (free) or Gold account that the content was purchased with. You only lose access when offline using a console with a different serial # than the console the content was originally purchased on.

Yeah, MS can't let that happen again if they plan for this DRM to be the long-term norm. Reminds me of the week-long Steam outage early in its life.

It wouldn't bother me so much for arcade titles and such, but games like rock band where i won't be able to play my DLC when Live is out kinda irks me.

So when live is out, you can't play your downloaded songs?

Correct. They cannot do a license transfer for me because I went from a premium to an Elite.

Actually there will be a tool released in June that will allow you to assign the content license to your current console, whatever it is. So you just have to wait a couple of weeks until that tool is released.

Although, if your XBOX was repaired with the same one or if they did the license transfer in the repair facility like there are supposed to you should be able to redownload the titles right away.
