Guitar Hero 4 - pics released

Because Guitar Hero has never been about just the guitar and because they always intended to include extra instruments in the GH series, GH4 is coming with Mic and Drums ...

Curtsy of Kotaku and Game Informer Magazine, here is the new drumkit from Guitar Hero 4

here is a link to a readable scan of the article

Supposedly confirmed bands that will be included with GH4 will be Van Halen, The Eagles, Linkin Park, and Sublime.

The drum kit will supposedly be more responsive and quieter than its Rock Band counterpart. I am very curious to know what will happen when you plug it in while playing Rock Band.

Yeah I saw a scan of that GI page earlier today some where. Red Octane and Activision are going to have to collectively pull there heads out of there asses if they think people are going to bite on GH4. They have dropped the ball in a big way when it come to the Guitar Hero franchise. The only good thing about it is the Gibson wireless controller. Downloadable content and audio/video content are what smart people are going to be looking for.

I went back and played GH 3 for the first time in MONTHS today and just did not enjoy it half as much as Rock Band. The note charts in GH are just a mess in most cases and the song selection (retail not DLC) is just so much more better in RB. There are on 2 songs in GH that I wished where in RB, Lay Down and Stricken.

It just seems Red Octane gave up on GH after it was released and started putting more into GH: Aerosmith. I'm almost affraid they'd do the same for GH 4. If they want to compete for my money this time around they are going to have to be better than the other guys.... and girls. Right now they definately aren't.

1) IMO, how they did on GH3 is absolutely irrelevant.
I will be looking at GH4 solely on its own merits.

2) From that photo alone, GH4's drum pads kick the shit out of RB's.
RB's drums are an interesting first-draft of a great promise.
They are too fiddly, the sensitivity is unreliable, they have no padding and are ridiculously loud and plasticy to the level of annoying, and they break too easily (from numerous, countless reports).
GH4's drums are in a MUCH superior position - the cymbals (there are two! both in their proper positions - an actual high-hat on the left and a ride/crash on the right) and drums should be able to emulate a drumset's play MUCH better.

3) Van Halen is always a slam-dunk to include.

I like the concept & for those interested its a no brainer. For me I have too much space taken up already from these types of games.

The drum kit does look nice. I like where the symbol crashes are located... ya know, where they should be.

So, as someone who has not gotten Rock Band yet, would you guys suggest I wait for GH4?

Actually it's very relevant. Why? 2 words Downloadable Content.

Do you think people would be playing Rock Band half as much if there wasn't a constant stream of DLC every week? Like this coming week for example. The Cars first album will be available. The second full album to be released for RB. Red octane and Activision have released exactly 3 songs worth buying, IMO, for GH3, and that was the classic rock pack. There track record for supporting the software they have out now is so far below Harmonix product its ridiculous. Prove to me I'm wrong and I'll take all I've said back.

The retail disk songs are great for a while but they get old. If there isn't new stuff to play in a game like this then the purchase price isn't worth it.

I absolutely agree. Rock Band was the best $159 I ever spent. Since February I've dumped about $70 into the downloadable songs and I'll continue to do so because of the quality of most of the songs being released. Harmonix has proven themselves as a game developer and as a company. They have my total loyalty and support. Pirate you need to pick up RB so we can start playing with you online. Its really quite cheap for a game with 3 instruments and a game disc.

I was toying with the idea of pickup up GH4 as well when it came out, but I realized that the number one reason that I'd buy it would be to play and sing a couple of the Linkin Park songs that I have been dieing for in Rock Band and that is just not a good enough reason.

Well if the difficulty of the DLC in Rock band is any indication of the mess that GH makes of note charts I guess I'll pass on this one.
