Civilization: Revolution (Demos Now Available)
Just played the demo for CR for about an hour... it seems to basically be the full game, it just stops at 1250AD (which lets you get quite into it, darn it).
First impressions: - Amazing graphical presentation. The general look of the game is much more colorful and interesting than Civ4 and the leaders/workers/whatever are presented in large and imposing ways. Everything you do seems to have some sort of cinematic impact, they're always popping up and gibbering and it works. You can't zoom out to a planet view, but what is there is great, and the fog effect is much cooler than the blackness of Civ4. - Gameplay is certainly simplified, but as of now I am not against it. The main thing they have done is limit "busy work" if you get me, the workers are all automatic for instance... you don't even build them, they just come with the city and do their thing (though you can set their priorities). Diplomacy seems centered on trade and trade alone when not in war, and the city screen is vastly more simple. At the end of the day though, didn't we all set our workers to auto at some point in Civ4 anyway? The game still feels deep and rewarding... - Warfare is cool, though I didn't mess with it too much. You can combine units into armies, which is neat, and combat is much more animated and fun. A military victory seems to require you only defeat a few civilizations, rather than all of them. There are no scouts in the game, so your warriors handle all the exploring, which is fine. - The game can also be won by getting 20 great persons and/or monuments, which is cool. There is an economic victory as well, where you just need $20,000 and to build the world bank (America wins!). And of course, the space victory. It should also be pointed out that the game moves much, much faster than Civ4, so if all this seems too easy keep that in mind. All in all if you have "gone console" and want to play Civ, you should love the game. If you still play and love Civ4 you might be annoyed by the simplifications, but it is a different experience and you might like it anyway. |

I haven't played a Civ game since the original. Which I still play from time to time. The Windows version of that game runs natively under Vista.
I may just give this one a go. KM

Long time fan of the Civilization franchise, but never played it enough to actually get a grip on everything and would inevitably get my ass handed to me fairly quickly. Most of the time I played using a trainer which allowed me to blow through technology research and attack the enemies pikemen with my tanks. (it was fun to me)
I downloaded the PS3 demo Friday night and by Saturday afternoon I had the full game. Incredibly enjoyable, easy to pickup an keeps enough of the PC game elements in tact to keep the hardcore Civ fans happy. I loved the fact that a lot of the micro-management was removed, like the need to farm and mine for gold. The guy at Gamestop said the game is flying off the shelf and it's been getting reviewed very well on the game sites. |
