Call of Duty: World at War Revealed

Published June 17, 2008

The next Call of Duty® is being revealed! You can watch the premiere of the worldwide reveal trailer for Call of Duty: World at War only on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace June 21.

Call of Duty: World at War completely changes the rules of engagement by redefining WWII gaming and thrusting players into the final tension-filled, unforgiving battles against a new ferocious enemy in the most dangerous and suspenseful action ever seen.

Powered by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare™ technology, Call of Duty: World at War brings an uncensored edge to combat, as soldiers face the most harrowing and climactic European and Pacific battles in which an enemy, who knows no surrender and no retreat, will fight to the last breath, unleashing an arsenal of lethal surprising tactics. Peril and danger lurk throughout the battlefield as players combat the unknown risk of the new chaos of battle.

From the remains of Russia and the ruins of Berlin, to the beach and jungles of the deadly Pacific Theater, the volatile action takes on added depth as players employ new features that previously were only available in multiplayer, including perks, rankings and online stats in up to four-player cooperative gameplay, and take advantage of the new infantry and vehicle-based weapons, like the potent flamethrower, that will set the battlefield ablaze.
Great so they blew there wad on Modern Warfare and are going back to WW2.
Sounds like they are going backwards to me but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I don't understand the fascination the makers of COD have with WW2. That horse has been beaten to death since the PS2 and Xbox. Move on to something else, Modern Warfare has so much more to offer then a WW2 shooter

Plus the developer is the abysmal Treyarch who did COD 3. None of COD 4 developers are working on this title.

Treyarch is actually a very competent dev studio. But for FPS games they are quite a few notches below infinity ward, so IW kinda makes 'em look bad.

Also, Treyarch seems to excel more at improving someone else's game when porting rather than starting completely from scratch.

Agree they were pretty damn awesome in the days of the Dreamcast versions of the Tony Hawk games. Still why did they need to go back to WWII

Ah so that is why COD 3 is so much better then COD 2. Still I will probably end up getting it but I definitely think this is a step backwards not having Infinity Ward working on the sequel.

They are working on a sequel...COD 6. Development will take a while, hence they skipped a number.

I don't understand the hate for COD3. I thought it was a good follow up.
Having said that, i really don't know why they'd go back to the WW2 well again after the awesome COD4. Why not Vietnam or something different?

That's fine but I'd rather wait for them to finish a proper sequel then to spew out inferior trash by another developer. Well I will pretty much guess right now that it gets a 7.5 from most reviews when it comes out.

I pulled this from Wikipedia but I really don't see any really great titles that they developed. For the Tony Hawk games they only ported those to the Dreamcast. I don't understand how in God's name they are able to develop the sequel to one of the best games last year.

Developed

* Die by the Sword (1998)
* Die by the Sword: Limb from Limb (1998) (Expansion Pack)
* Triple Play 2000 (1999)
* Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm (2000)
* Max Steel (2000)
* Triple Play 2001 (2000)
* NHL 2K2 (2001)
* Triple Play Baseball (2001)
* Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer (2002)
* Minority Report: Everybody Runs (2002)
* Spider-Man (2002)
* NHL 2K3 (2002)
* Spider-Man 2 (2004)
* Call of Duty: United Offensive(2004)
* Call of Duty 2: Big Red One (2005)
* Ultimate Spider-Man (2005)
* Call of Duty 3 (2006)
* Spider-Man 3 (2007) (Only developed the Xbox 360 & PS3 version of the game)

Ported

* Spider-Man (2000) (originally by Neversoft)
* Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (to Dreamcast) (originally by Neversoft)
* Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (to Dreamcast) (originally by Neversoft)
* Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 & Tony Hawk's Pro Skater as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X (to Xbox) (originally by Neversoft)

There was a rumor a while back that Ifinity Ward was pissed about CoD3 and demanded all CoD games be developed by them. I wonder if this one being called "world at war" and not CoD5 has anything to do with that. It's more a spin-off than a true sequel...?

In any case, it looks good. CoD3 lacked the polish of 2, and 4 for that matter, but it was still a beyond capable FPS and much better than crap like Battlefield Bad Company. I look forward to this game.

So what are you saying? You would be content with an average FPS? I think this is a huge mistake that the sequel is not being made by IW.

Agreed. I don't get what they are thinking. Does Infinity Ward cost too much. Will it be easier to get some sequel buyers in, then another game by IW. I am figuring I will not even touch this one.

It's because it takes IW 2 years to make a good game and Activision wants a new CoD every holiday so they can make mad money...

Yes, of course I want an amazing IW game... but that doesn't mean good Treyarch game is beneath notice. CoD3 got reviews mostly in the 8-9 range, and was a good game... 4 being a blockbuster doesn't mean 3 was total crap (and WaW will be).

IMO Tony Hawk 2x (Treyarch's port to XBOX1) was by far the best Tony Hawk game ever made. They nailed the control and gameplay in a way Neversoft didn't in any of the iterations including the original TH2 & Neversoft's TH3 sequel on XBOX.

Just watched a coop video at Gamespy and when the voice of the lead Army guy came over my speakers it was unmistakable who it was. Check out coop flamethrower.
