loud special effects low dialogue

I'm not sure if I'm even in the right section but I have a problem that is really quite annoying.I purchased Swordfish and I noticed the special sound effects(explosions which were excellent) were much louder then the dialogue. How can I solve this problem do I just bite the bullit and turn up the dialogue scenes and turn down the explosions.I have noticed this in other DVD but just can't remember there names.I asked someone at work and they said it was just the way the studio made the DVD giving you and average to an below average audio track.I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this problem I have a Toshiba SD2700 DVD Player and a Harmon Kardon AVR210 receiver.

I forget if Swordfish uses any dialog normalization or not. You can turn up the volume on your center channel alone (probalby not the best idea) or see if your receiver has Dynamic Range Compression (DRC) I believe it's called. If you turn this on, the receiver will automagically adjust volume levels WITHOUT taking away from the intensity of the action. This should help to make the sound more "appealing" to you....

If you go the center channel volume route, adjust the volume on your center channel ONLY and not the "main" volume which affects all the speakers.....

I'm sure others will chime in....

Peace....

It might be along the lines of what tomdkat suggests, but it also might be what your friend suggests. Some audio mixes sometimes just don't care about the dialog quality. They seem more intent on hearing big explosions.

I'm not saying that my previous assessment was correct, but I watched Swordfish on my system and found the audio very easy to follow and understand. I was NOT adjusting the volume at all during the movie. One tihng that MIGHT have helped is my powered center channel (150W built-in AMP). I find the powered center channel has helped the audio out a LOT when I watch movies...

Peace....

Or it could be the connection between the receiver and the center channel. I had some cables flake out on me. The sound was still there, just very quiet.

Checking the connections is free...

(Not that the other stuff isn't...)

Good luck,

-M
